An HVAC controller including a controller and a display operatively coupled to the controller. The display may include a first region and a second region. The first region of the display may have an array of pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format. The second region of the display may have a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons. The controller may be configured to display one or more programmable options of the HVAC controller in the first region of the display for selection by a user, where the programmable options may be used to set settings that are capable of controlling subsequent operations and/or functionality of the HVAC controller. The controller may be configured to selectively animate one or more of the programmable options displayed in the first region.

What is claimed is: 1. An HVAC controller, comprising: a housing; a controller including a processor, wherein the controller is housed by the housing; and a fixed segment display housed by the housing and viewable from outside of the housing, the fixed segment display operatively coupled to the controller, the fixed segment display implemented using a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology having predefined LCD fixed segments, the fixed segment display comprising: a first region having an array of predefined LCD fixed segments provided on a display substrate of the fixed segment display at predetermined fixed locations and arranged as a 2-dimensional array of pixels including a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns where each predefined LCD fixed segment can be turned on and off under control of the controller for displaying an image in a dot matrix format; and a second region having a plurality of predefined LCD fixed segments, wherein the plurality of predefined LCD fixed segments are provided on the same display substrate of the fixed segment display as the array of fixed segments of the first region and at predetermined fixed locations outside of the first region, the predefined LCD fixed segments of the second region are not arranged to form a 2-dimensional array of pixels but rather each predefined LCD fixed segment of the second region defines an elongated segment, a symbol and/or a graphical icon that can be turned on and off under control of the controller, wherein the controller is configured to: individually turn on and off a subset of the plurality of predefined LCD fixed segments to generate different numerical values in the second region; cause the first region to display a first screen of a set of screens, wherein each screen of the set of screens represents one or more steps of a process; receive information indicative of an instruction to move from a first step of the process to a second step of the process; and transition the first region from displaying a first screen of the set of screens to displaying a second screen of the set of screens, causing one or more animations corresponding to one or both of the first screen and the second screen to appear to slide across the first region responsive to the controller receiving the information indicative of the instruction to move from the first step of the process to the second step of the process. 2. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the controller allows the user to select between two or more programmable options, wherein the controller is configured to display less than all of the two or more programmable options in the first region of the fixed segment display at any given time, and allows selection by the user of a displayed programmable option. 3. The HVAC controller of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to allow a user to scroll through the two or more programmable options in the first region, and as the user scrolls through the two or more programmable options, the programmable options animate and appear to move in a vertical direction. 4. The HVAC controller of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to allow a user to scroll through the two or more programmable options in the first region, and as the user scrolls through the two or more programmable options, the programmable options animate and appear to move in a horizontal direction. 5. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , further comprising a button, wherein the controller is configured to selectively animate one or more of the programmable options displayed in the first region in response to activation of the button. 6. The HVAC controller of claim 5 , wherein the fixed segment display is a touch screen display, and the button corresponds to a button region defined on the touch screen display. 7. The HVAC controller of claim 5 , wherein the button corresponds to a physical button that is laterally offset from the fixed segment display. 8. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more of the programmable options appear to incrementally move in the vertical direction. 9. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more of the programmable options appear to incrementally move in the horizontal direction. 10. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the first region of the fixed segment display simultaneously displays in a vertical direction an integer number of programmable options plus a fraction of a programmable option. 11. The HVAC controller of claim 10 , wherein the first region of the fixed segment display simultaneously displays in a vertical direction two programmable options plus a fraction of a third programmable option. 12. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to turn on a first predefined LCD fixed segment corresponding to a first active touch area in the second region and to turn on a second predefined LCD fixed segment corresponding to a second active touch area in the second region and, in response to receiving user input at one of the first active touch area or the second active touch area, turn on or off at least one predefined LCD segment of the subset of the plurality of predefined LCD fixed segments to change a numerical value being displayed in the second region.
