An HVAC Controller may include a first sub-assembly and a second sub-assembly releasably engageble with the first sub-assembly. The first sub-assembly may include a first housing and a printed circuit board capable of being secured relative to the first housing and capable of providing one or more signals. The second sub-assembly may include a second housing and a second printed circuit board capable of being secured relative to the second housing and capable of receiving the one or more signals from the first printed circuit boards when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaging the second sub-assembly. The first printed circuit board and the second printed circuit board each may have one or more component mounted on sides facing one another, the components each extending a distance. The sum of the distances may be greater than a distance spacing the facing sides of the printed circuit boards.

What is claimed is: 1. An HVAC controller for controlling one or more HVAC components, the HVAC controller comprising: a first sub-assembly comprising: a first housing; a first printed circuit board having a controller for providing one or more signals, the first printed circuit board secured relative to the first housing; a second sub-assembly configured to releasably engage the first sub-assembly, the second sub-assembly comprising: a second housing; a second printed circuit board secured relative to the second housing, the second printed circuit board having circuitry configured to receive the one or more signals from the first printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly and to provide one or more control signals to control one or more HVAC components; the first printed circuit board having a first side facing the second printed circuit board and a second side facing away from the second printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly; wherein the first housing includes a cover that extends adjacent the second side of the first printed circuit board and a back that extends adjacent the first side of the first printed circuit board, wherein the back includes an aperture for accommodating an inter-board connector that carries the one or more signals from the first printed circuit board to the second printed circuit board; the second printed circuit board having a first side facing the first printed circuit board and a second side facing away from the first printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly; wherein the first side of the first printed circuit board is spaced from the first side of the second printed circuit board by a spacing when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly; and the first printed circuit board having a first component mounted to the first side of the first printed circuit board that extends a first distance toward the first side of the second printed circuit board and does not engage the second printed circuit board and does not engage any component extending from the second printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly, and the second printed circuit board having a second component mounted to the first side of the second printed circuit board that extends a second distance toward the first side of the first printed circuit board and does not engage the first printed circuit board and does not engage any a component extending from the first printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly, the first distance plus the second distance being greater than the spacing, and wherein the component mounted to the first side of the first printed circuit board is laterally offset relative to the component mounted to the first side of the second printed circuit board. 2. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the first distance is less than the spacing, and the second distance is less than the spacing. 3. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the inter-board connector is movable up to a predetermined distance when connecting the first printed circuit board to the second printed circuit board to accommodate an amount of connector misalignment. 4. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the cover and the back of the first housing substantially enclose the first printed circuit board. 5. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , further comprising a display situated adjacent the second side of the first printed circuit board, and the cover of the first housing includes an aperture that exposes at least part of the display for viewing. 6. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the first printed circuit board extends laterally beyond a peripheral edge of the second printed circuit board in at least one direction, resulting in a non-overlapping region. 7. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry of the second printed circuit board does not include ESD sensitive components. 8. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry of the second printed circuit board includes one more relays, one or more capacitors, and one or more terminal blocks. 9. The HVAC contoller of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the second printed circuit board includes one or more test that are suitable for performing functional test of the controller of the first printed circuit board and the circuitry of the second printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly. 10. The HVAC controller of claim 6 , wherein the non-overlapping region of the first printed circuit board includes battery terminals to connect to one or more batteries. 11. The HVAC controller of claim 6 , wherein a connector is mounted to the non-overlapping region and is aligned with a receiving aperture through the first housing. 12. The HVAC controller of claim 7 , wherein the controller of the first printed circuit board does include ESD sensitive components. 13. The HVAC controller of claim 10 , wherein, when present, the one or more batteries extend away from the first side of the first printed circuit board toward the second housing by a third distance that is greater than the spacing. 14. The HVAC controller of claim 13 , wherein the second housing includes a recess to accommodate at least part of the one or more batteries when present. 15. An HVAC controller for controlling one or more HVAC components, the HVAC controller comprising: a first sub-assembly comprising: a first housing; a first printed circuit board having an outer perimeter and having a controller for providing one or more signals, the first printed circuit board secured relative to the first housing; wherein when the first printed circuit board is secured relative to the first housing, the first housing extends beyond the outer perimeter of the first printed circuit board; a second sub-assembly configured to releasably engage the first sub-assembly, the second sub-assembly comprising: a second housing; a second printed circuit board having an outer perimeter and secured relative to the second housing, the second printed circuit board having circuitry configured to receive the one or more signals from the first printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly and to provide one or more control signals to control one or more HVAC components; wherein when the second printed circuit board is secured relative to the second housing, the second housing extends beyond the outer perimeter of the second printed circuit board; an inter-board connector that carries the one or more signals from the first printed circuit board to the second printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly, and wherein the inter-board connector is mounted to be laterally movable up to a predetermined distance when connecting the first printed circuit board to the second printed circuit board to accommodate an amount of connector miss-alignment; and wherein the first printed circuit board extends laterally beyond a peripheral edge of the second printed circuit board in at least one direction, resulting in at least one non-overlapping region, wherein the at least one non-overlapping region includes one or more of: a battery; a connector that is aligned with a receiving aperture through the first housing; and an antenna. 16
