Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Filter assemblies and components therefor, are described. In an example arrangement, the crankcase ventilation filter assembly is configured to be serviced from either the top or the bottom. A rotational indexing arrangement is to ensure appropriate orientation of an internally received filter cartridge, and other components of the arrangement are provided. Methods of assembly, servicing and use are described.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A filter cartridge comprising: (a) first and second, opposite, end members; and, (b) filter media positioned between the first and second, opposite, end members and surrounding an open filter interior; (c) the first end member comprising a member having an aperture therethrough and including a seal member thereon; (i) the seal member defining a non-circular seal perimeter; and, (d) the second, opposite, end member being closed and including a closed receiver projection thereon projecting toward the first end member at least 10% of a distance between opposite ends of the filter media; (i) the closed receiver projection has a non-circular, inner, cross-sectional shape. 2. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the seal member defines a non-circular radially outwardly directed seal. 3. A filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein: (a) a seal member is positioned on a seal mount at a location entirely above the filter media. 4. A filter cartridge according to claim 3 wherein: (a) the closed receiver projection on the second end member projects toward the first end member an amount within the range of 10%-30%, inclusive of a distance between opposite sides of the filter media. 5. A filter cartridge according to claim 4 wherein: (a) the receiver projection projects toward the first end member to an end of the receiver member that is offset from a center of the first end member. 6. A filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein: (a) the filter media surrounds a central longitudinal axis; and, (b) the seal member defines a seal perimeter in a seal plane orthogonal to the filter media central longitudinal axis. 7. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the first end member has an elliptical outer perimeter. 8. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the seal comprises an o-ring. 9. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) a seal member is positioned on a seal mount at a location entirely above the filter media. 10. A filter cartridge according to claim 9 wherein: (a) the closed receiver projection on the second end member projects toward the first end member an amount within the range of 10%-30%, inclusive of a distance between opposite sides of the media. 11. A filter cartridge according to claim 10 wherein: (a) the receiver projection projects toward the first end member to an end of the receiver member that is offset from a center of the first end member. 12. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the filter media surrounds a central, permeable, core member. 13. A filter cartridge according to claim 12 wherein: (a) the central core member extends completely between the first end member and the second end member. 14. A filter cartridge according to claim 13 wherein: (a) the filter cartridge includes a media support, wherein the media support includes: the first end member; the second end member; the closed receiver projection; and, the central permeable, core member. 15. A filter cartridge according to claim 13 wherein: (a) the media has a circular outer perimeter.
