What is claimed is: 1. A compound of formula: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 4. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 5. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 6. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 7. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of claim 1 , or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. 8. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is suitable for oral delivery. 9. A method for treating sickle cell disease comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a pharmaceutical composition of claim 8 . 10. A method for increasing oxygen affinity of hemoglobin S in a subject, the method comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a compound of claim 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 11. A method for treating sickle cell disease comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a compound of claim 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
