A bonding washer for making electrical connection between two metal pieces that are to be mechanically fastened together. The washer, to be interposed between the two metal pieces, may be constructed so as to fasten to one of the pieces before the two pieces are joined. Teeth on the washer, positioned at right angles to the plane of the washer, are forced into each of the two metal pieces when the fastener is tightened, making electrical connection between the two metal pieces.

What is claimed is: 1. A bonding washer comprising: an electrically conductive body having a first surface with at least one tooth having a distal end facing away from said first surface, and a second surface opposite said first surface and having at least one tooth facing away from said second surface; a first spring member extending away from said second surface; and a second spring member extending away from said second surface and spaced from said first spring member, said first spring member and second spring member configured for gripping opposite faces of a metal work piece between said first spring member and said second spring member, and said at least one tooth extending away from said second surface of said electrically conductive body configured for engaging a surface of the work piece extending between the opposite faces of the work piece. 2. The bonding washer of claim 1 , wherein said at least one tooth facing away from said first surface comprises a first array of teeth. 3. The bonding washer of claim 2 , wherein said at least one tooth facing away from said second surface comprises a second array of teeth. 4. The bonding washer of claim 3 , wherein said first array of teeth and said second array of teeth are substantially parallel. 5. The bonding washer of claim 1 , wherein said electrically conductive body has a first side edge and a second side edge, said first spring member extending from said first side edge and from said second surface of said body. 6. The bonding washer of claim 5 , wherein said second spring member extends from said second side edge and from said second surface of said electrically conductive body. 7. The bonding washer of claim 5 , wherein said first spring member and said second spring member have a longitudinal length corresponding to a longitudinal length of said electrically conductive body, and a width sufficient for gripping the opposite sides of the work piece. 8. The bonding washer of claim 7 , wherein said first spring member and said second spring member have a curved profile with an inner convex surface facing the work piece and an outer concave surface. 9. The bonding washer of claim 8 , wherein the inner convex surface of the first spring member facing the inner convex surface of the second spring member. 10. The bonding washer of claim 1 , wherein said electrically conductive body has a first longitudinal side edge and a second longitudinal side edge opposite said first side edge, said first spring member extending from said first side edge, and having a first face and a second face, said second spring member extending from said second side edge of said body and having a first face and second face, wherein said second face of said first spring member faces said second face of said second spring member for gripping the work piece between said second faces. 11. The bonding washer of claim 1 , wherein said first spring member and second spring member extend from said electrically conducting body in a direction substantially perpendicular to a plane of said body. 12. The bonding washer of claim 1 , wherein said first spring member is configured to contact a first side of said work piece, the second spring member configured to contact a second side of the work piece opposite said first side, and said second surface of electrically conductive body is configured to contact a third side of said work piece extending between said first side and second side of said work piece. 13. A bonding washer comprising; a substantially flat electrically conductive washer section having an opening, a first side, and a second side; a plurality of first teeth extending away from said second side of said washer section; a tubular body extending from said second side of said washer section, said tubular body having an outer surface with a plurality of second teeth having a distal end facing radially outward from said outer surface; said tubular body being axially compressible and a portion of said tubular body being radially expandable by applying an axial force to a distal end of said tubular section to clamp a metal work piece between said first teeth on said washer section and said second teeth on said tubular body. 14. The bonding washer of claim 13 , said tubular body further comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending spaced apart slits forming a plurality of deformable sections, and where said second teeth of said tubular body are formed on said deformable sections. 15. The bonding washer of claim 14 , wherein said second teeth are oriented at a proximal end of said deformable sections. 16. The bonding washer of claim 15 , further comprising a threaded bolt extending through said washer section and a threaded fastener coupled to said bolt for axially compressing said tubular section and bending said deformable sections radially outward, whereby said first teeth of said washer section form an electrical contact with a first surface of a metal work piece and said second teeth of said deformable sections form an electrical contact with a second surface of the metal work piece. 17. The bonding washer of claim 15 , wherein said washer section and a distal end of said tubular section have internal threads for receiving a threaded fastener, whereby tightening said threaded fastener axially compresses said tubular body and bends said deformable sections radially outward to a position substantially parallel to said washer section and where said second teeth of said deformable section face said first teeth and said washer section. 18. The bonding washer of claim 15 , further comprising; a mandrel extending through said tubular body and said washer section, said mandrel having a distal end with a head engaging a distal end of said tubular body, and a mandrel tail extending from said washer section, whereby a pulling force on said mandrel away from said washer section axially compresses said tubular section and deforms said deformable section radially outward to a position substantially parallel to said washer sections, and where said second teeth of said deformable section face said first teeth and said washer section. 19. The bonding washer of claim 18 , wherein said mandrel tail has a frangible portion to break said mandrel tail by the pulling force on said mandrel tail.
