A process of forming a resveratrol-based flame retardant small molecule with a phosphonate/phosphinate molecule that includes a chloride group and a terminal functional group.

What is claimed is: 1. A resveratrol-based flame retardant compound having the following structural formula: wherein R corresponds to an alkyl group; and wherein X includes a terminal functional group selected from the group consisting of: an allyl group; an epoxide group; an ethylene carbonate group; an amine group; and a carboxyl group. 2.
