This patent specification describes a barcode-reading enhancement accessory for a mobile device having a barcode-reading capability. The accessory may include an outer case and an inner carriage. A mobile device is encased in the inner carriage, and the combination of the inner carriage and the mobile device is accommodated in the outer case. The inner carriage is configured to accommodate a mobile device of a particular size such that a mobile device of a different size may be accommodated in the outer case using a different inner carriage. The accessory may also include an optic system to fold an optical path of a field of illumination of a light source of the mobile device and/or a field of view of a camera of the mobile device.

What is claimed is: 1. An accessory for a mobile device having a barcode-reading capability, comprising: a case having a cavity configured to accommodate the mobile device; a handle assembly configured to be secured to the case that accommodates the mobile device, wherein the handle assembly comprises a user control that is actuatable to initiate barcode reading; a power and data connector positioned in the handle assembly so that the power and data connector is coupled to a mating power and data connector of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case and the case is coupled to the handle assembly; circuitry that is configured to send a trigger signal to the mobile device via the power and data connector in response to actuation of the user control; and an optic system secured to the case and configured to fold an optical path of at least one of a field of illumination of a light source of the mobile device or a field of view of a camera of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case. 2. The accessory of claim 1 , wherein the user control comprises a trigger switch. 3. The accessory of claim 2 , wherein the handle assembly comprises a handle that extends downward away from a back surface of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case. 4. The accessory of claim 3 , wherein: the accessory comprises a shoulder where the handle meets a portion of the accessory that is adjacent to the back surface of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case; and the handle is sized and shaped to be gripped by an operator with the operator's thumb and forefinger being positioned at the shoulder. 5. The accessory of claim 1 , wherein the handle assembly further comprises a supplemental illumination system that is configured to emit at least one of targeting illumination, diffuse bright field illumination, and dark field illumination. 6. The accessory of claim 1 , wherein the user control that is actuatable to initiate barcode reading initiates barcode reading in part by causing the mobile device to capture an image using the camera of the mobile device. 7. The accessory of claim 1 , wherein: the handle assembly comprises a platform surface and a docking surface; the platform surface is in contact with a portion of an interior surface of the case when the case is coupled to the handle assembly; the docking surface is perpendicular to the platform surface; and the power and data connector extends from the docking surface of the handle assembly. 8. An accessory for a mobile device having barcode-reading capability, comprising: a plurality of cases, each case having a cavity of a different size; a handle assembly configured to be secured to one of the plurality of cases that accommodates the mobile device, wherein the handle assembly comprises a user control that is actuatable to initiate barcode reading; a power and data connector positioned in the handle assembly so that the power and data connector is coupled to a mating power and data connector of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in a case from among the plurality of cases and the case is coupled to the handle assembly; circuitry that is configured to send a trigger signal to the mobile device via the power and data connector in response to actuation of the user control; and an optic system secured to each case and configured to fold an optical path of at least one of a field of illumination of a light source of the mobile device or a field of view of a camera of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in one of the plurality of cases. 9. The accessory of claim 8 , wherein the user control comprises a trigger switch. 10. The accessory of claim 9 , wherein the handle assembly comprises a handle that extends downward away from a back surface of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in one of the plurality of cases. 11. The accessory of claim 10 , wherein: the accessory comprises a shoulder where the handle meets a portion of the accessory that is adjacent to the back surface of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in one of the plurality of cases; and the handle is sized and shaped to be gripped by an operator with the operator's thumb and forefinger being positioned at the shoulder. 12. The accessory of claim 8 , wherein the handle assembly further comprises a supplemental illumination system that is configured to emit at least one of targeting illumination, diffuse bright field illumination, and dark field illumination. 13. The accessory of claim 8 , wherein the user control that is actuatable to initiate barcode reading initiates barcode reading in part by causing the mobile device to capture an image using the camera of the mobile device. 14. An accessory for a mobile device having a barcode-reading capability, comprising: a case configured to encapsulate substantially a back surface and one or more side edges of the mobile device; a handle assembly configured to be secured to the case with the mobile device, wherein the handle assembly comprises a user control that is actuatable to initiate barcode reading; a power and data connector positioned in the handle assembly so that the power and data connector is coupled to a mating power and data connector of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case and the case is coupled to the handle assembly; circuitry that is configured to send a trigger signal to the mobile device via the power and data connector in response to actuation of the user control; and an optic system secured to the case and configured to fold an optical path of at least one of a field of illumination of a light source of the mobile device or a field of view of a camera of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case. 15. The accessory of claim 14 , wherein the user control comprises a trigger switch. 16. The accessory of claim 15 , wherein the handle assembly comprises a handle that extends downward away from the back surface of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case. 17. The accessory of claim 16 , wherein: the accessory comprises a shoulder where the handle meets a portion of the accessory that is adjacent to the back surface of the mobile device when the mobile device is accommodated in the case; and the handle is sized and shaped to be gripped by an operator with the operator's thumb and forefinger being positioned at the shoulder. 18. The accessory of claim 14 , wherein the user control that is actuatable to initiate barcode reading initiates barcode reading in part by causing the mobile device to capture an image using the camera of the mobile device.
