Official abstract text for this publication.
Surface-modified nanoparticles are produced by associating ligand interactive agents with the surface of a nanoparticle. The ligand interactive agents are bound to surface modifying ligands that are tailored to impart particular solubility and/or compatibility properties. The ligand interactive agents are crosslinked via a linking/crosslinking agent, such as hexamethoxymethylmelamine or a derivative thereof. The linking/crosslinking agent may provide a binding site for binding the surface modifying ligands to the ligand interactive agents.

What is claimed is: 1. A composition of matter, the composition comprising: a host material; and a population of surface-modified nanoparticles dispersed in the host material, the surface-modified nanoparticles comprising: a ligand interactive agent-nanoparticle association complex; a linking/crosslinking agent bound to a ligand interactive agent of the ligand interactive agent-nanoparticle association complex; and a surface modifying ligand bound to the linking/crosslinking agent, wherein the surface modifying ligand is configured to render the surface-modified nanoparticles compatible with the host material. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the host material is a solvent. 3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the solvent is a polar solvent selected from the group consisting of water, ethanol, propanol, butanol, acetone, methylethylketone, tripropylmethylmethacrylate, and methylmethacrylate. 4.
