Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A respiratory mask assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient includes a frame and a cushion. The cushion has a non-face contacting portion structured to be connected to the frame, a face-contacting portion structured to engage the patient's face, and a central portion that interconnects the non-face contacting portion and the face contacting portion. The frame may be structured to allow a forehead support to assume multiple positions, to compensate for replacement cushions that may have a different profile, shape or size. The cushion is structured to compensate for variations in strap tension, treatment pressure and/or movement of the patient. Headgear may be provided with a strap assembly in which one or more straps is provided with selectively adjustable elasticity or extensibility that may be automatically changed in dependence of treatment pressure and/or treatment type.

What is claimed is: 1. A respiratory mask assembly for treatment of sleep disordered breathing, the respiratory mask assembly comprising: a frame; a cushion which at least in part defines a cavity, wherein the cushion provides an aperture capable of receiving at least a patient's nose, and wherein the cushion includes: a face contacting portion, a non-face contacting portion, and a gusset portion between the face contacting portion and the non-face contacting portion, the gusset portion configured to provide flexibility and increased travel at a nasal bridge region of the cushion, wherein the gusset portion protrudes laterally outwardly with respect to the non-face contacting portion, wherein the gusset portion includes an outer wall configured to fold over and outside of an inner wall of the gusset portion when the face contacting and non-face contacting portions are compressed towards one another, and wherein the gusset portion includes a tip section that interconnects the inner wall and the outer wall, the tip section arranged to roll or curl under and inside the outer wall when the face contacting and non-face contacting portions are compressed towards one another; and an air delivery connection supported by the frame and adapted to connect an air delivery conduit to supply air to the cavity. 2. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the tip section is positioned laterally outwardly with respect to the non-face contacting portion. 3. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the gusset portion has a greater projected outer area than the non-face contacting portion at the nasal bridge region. 4. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein a portion of the outer wall hangs over the inner wall when seen in cross-section. 5. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the gusset portion has a cross-section that includes a first thickness in a first portion and a second thickness in a second portion, and said second thickness is greater than said first thickness. 6. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the first thickness and the second thickness are selected to control an outer area of the cushion to be substantially constant when the gusset portion is under tension and/or compression. 7. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the first thickness and the second thickness are selected to control an outer profile of the cushion at the gusset portion to be substantially constant when the gusset portion is under tension and/or compression. 8. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the cushion includes an increased cross-sectional thickness in a region of the non-face contacting portion near the gusset portion. 9. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the gusset portion includes a constant projected outer area under extension and compression. 10. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the gusset portion is provided only at the nasal bridge region of the cushion. 11. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the mask assembly is adapted to seal to the patient in a region directly below a patient's lower lip. 12. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the gusset portion is thinner in cross-section than a thickness of the non-face contacting portion. 13. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the cushion is stiffer at a cheek region than the nasal bridge region of the cushion. 14. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a reinforcing member provided between the gusset portion and the face contacting portion at the nasal bridge region of the cushion, the reinforcing member including a thickened reinforcing section structured and arranged to add stiffness in the nasal bridge region of the cushion. 15. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the gusset portion includes only a single gusset that protrudes laterally outwardly with respect to the non-face contacting portion. 16. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the non-face contacting portion provides at least a portion of a breathing chamber forming portion forming a mask interior breathing chamber. 17. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the breathing chamber forming portion forms at least a portion of a front side of the mask assembly and the face contacting portion forms at least a portion of a rear side of the mask assembly, the breathing chamber forming portion, when provided to the frame, forms an exterior surface exposed at the front side of the mask assembly. 18. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the frame is external to the mask interior breathing chamber. 19. The respiratory mask assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the breathing chamber forming portion comprises a one piece construction with the face contacting portion and the gusset portion.
