The invention claimed is: 1. A method for: (a) increasing skeletal muscle mass; (b) reducing skeletal muscle atrophy; (c) increasing muscular strength; (d) promoting muscle growth; (e) decreasing muscle wasting; or (f) increasing strength per unit of muscle mass in an animal identified or having been identified to be in need of one or more of (a)-(f), the method comprising administering to the animal an effective amount of a compound of formula: or a stereoisomer, tautomer, solvate, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, thereby accomplishing one or more of (a)-(f), wherein the animal is not a human or a rabbit. 2. The method according to claim 1 , for increasing skeletal muscle mass, wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 3. The method according to claim 1 , for reducing skeletal muscle atrophy, wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 4. The method according to claim 1 , for increasing muscular strength, wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 5. The method according to claim 1 , for promoting muscle growth, wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 6. The method according to claim 1 , for decreasing muscle wasting, wherein the compound is: or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 7. The method according to claim 1 , for increasing strength per unit of muscle mass, wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 8. The method according to claim 1 , comprising administering to the animal greater than 75 mg per day of the compound or stereoisomer, tautomer, solvate, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 9. The method according to claim 1 , comprising administering to the animal greater than 100 mg per day of the compound or stereoisomer, tautomer, solvate, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 11. The method according to claim 1 , comprising administering to the animal greater than 150 mg per day of the compound or stereoisomer, tautomer, solvate, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 13. The method according to claim 1 , comprising administering to the animal at least 5.0 mg/kg per day of the compound or stereoisomer, tautomer, solvate, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 15. The method according to claim 1 , comprising administering to the animal 0.5 to 250 mg/kg per day of the compound or stereoisomer, tautomer, solvate, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said animal is selected from the group consisting of a non-human primate, domesticated fish, domesticated crustacean, domesticated mollusk, poultry, dog, cat, and livestock. 18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said animal is selected from the group consisting of a non-human primate, horse, pig, dog, sheep, goat, cow, cat, guinea pig, fish, and bird. 20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the compound is or a stereoisomer or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
