Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for preloading a bearing includes releasably, threadably, and directly attaching an attaching member to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle. A frame is axially separated from, and coupled to, the attaching member. A plurality of extensions extends from the frame axially past the attaching member toward the wheel hub assembly. An adjustment mechanism moves the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly to contact the wheel hub assembly and/or the bearing to apply a preload to the bearing within the wheel hub assembly.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for providing a preload to a bearing within a wheel hub assembly comprising; providing an attaching member, and releasably, threadably, and directly attaching the attaching member to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle of the wheel hub assembly; providing a frame axially separated from, and coupled to, the attaching member; providing a plurality of extensions extending from the frame axially past the attaching member towards the wheel hub assembly; providing an adjustment mechanism, and the adjustment mechanism moving the frame and the plurality of extensions relative to the attaching member and axially along a longitudinal axis of the shaft towards the wheel hub assembly to contact at least one of a wheel hub or a bearing of said wheel hub assembly to apply the preload to the bearing within the wheel hub assembly. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moving the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly comprises an automated fluid supply device of the adjustment mechanism supplying pressure to the frame to move the frame toward the wheel hub assembly. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the adjustment mechanism further comprises a fluid filled cavity between the frame and the rotatable member. 4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising the adjustment mechanism automatically regulating the preload applied to the bearing. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises an automated adjustment mechanism and wherein the moving the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly comprises a rotatable member of the automated adjustment mechanism rotating to cause the movement to the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the rotatable member surrounds the attaching member and the attaching member comprises a rod. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a proximal direction extends toward the frame from the shaft, a distal direction being opposite from the proximal direction and extending toward the shaft from the frame, the adjustment mechanism located axially proximal relative to the frame and the attaching member, the frame located axially proximal to the attaching member and between the adjustment mechanism the said attaching member, and the attaching member located between the shaft and the frame. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an indicator displaying a parameter corresponding to the preload. 9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the plurality of extensions contacting an inner face of the bearing of the wheel hub assembly. 10. An apparatus for providing a preload to a bearing within a wheel hub assembly comprising: an attaching member releasably, threadably, and directly attachable to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle of the wheel hub assembly; a frame axially separated from, and coupled to, the attaching member; a plurality of extensions extending from the frame axially past the attaching member towards the wheel hub assembly; an adjustment mechanism configured to move the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly to contact at least one of a wheel hub or a bearing of said wheel hub assembly to apply the preload to the bearing within the wheel hub assembly; wherein the moving the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly comprises the frame moving relative to the attaching member in an axial direction along a longitudinal axis of the shaft. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the adjustment mechanism further comprises an automated fluid supply device, wherein the moving the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly comprises the automated fluid supply device supplying pressure to the frame to move the frame toward the wheel hub assembly. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the adjustment mechanism further comprises a fluid filled cavity between the frame and the rotatable member. 13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the adjustment mechanism is configured to control the automated fluid supply device to supply the pressure to the frame to automatically regulate the preload applied to the bearing. 14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises an automated adjustment mechanism, wherein the adjustment mechanism further comprises a rotatable member, and wherein the moving the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly comprises the rotatable member rotating to cause the movement to the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the rotatable member surrounds the attaching member and the attaching member comprises a rod. 16. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein a proximal direction extends toward the frame from the shaft, a distal direction being opposite from the proximal direction and extending toward the shaft from the frame, the adjustment mechanism located axially proximal relative to the frame and the attaching member, the frame located axially proximal to the attaching member and between the adjustment mechanism the said attaching member, and the attaching member located between the shaft and the frame. 17. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising an indicator displaying a parameter corresponding to the preload. 18. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising the plurality of extensions contacting an inner face of the bearing of the wheel hub assembly.
