Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus for preloading a bearing includes an attaching member, a frame, a plurality of extensions, and an adjustment mechanism. The attaching member is releasably attachable to a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle of a wheel hub assembly. The frame is axially separated from, and coupled to, the attaching member to allow the frame to move relative to the attaching member in an axial direction along the longitudinal axis. The plurality of extensions is configured to contact at least one of a wheel hub or a bearing of the wheel hub assembly when the attaching member is attached to the threaded shaft. The adjustment mechanism is configured to move the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly to apply a preload to a bearing within the wheel hub assembly.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for providing a preload to a bearing within a wheel hub assembly comprising: an attaching member releasably, threadably, and directly attachable to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle of the wheel hub assembly, the shaft having a longitudinal axis, wherein a proximal direction extends toward a frame from said shaft, a distal direction being opposite from the proximal direction and extending toward the shaft from said frame; said frame axially separated from, and coupled to, said attaching member to allow said frame to move relative to said attaching member in an axial direction along the longitudinal axis; a plurality of extensions extending from said frame axially past said attaching member in the distal direction towards the wheel hub assembly, said plurality of extensions being configured to contact at least one of a wheel hub or a bearing of said wheel hub assembly when said attaching member is attached to said threaded shaft; an adjustment mechanism configured to move said frame and said plurality of extensions axially towards said wheel hub assembly to apply a preload to a bearing within said wheel hub assembly; and said adjustment mechanism located axially proximal relative to said frame and said attaching member, said frame located axially proximal to said attaching member and between said adjustment mechanism and said attaching member, said attaching member located between the shaft and said frame when said attaching member is attached directly to said threaded shaft. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said plurality of extensions contacts said bearing. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said plurality of extensions contacts an inner face of said bearing. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said adjustment mechanism comprises a rotatable member. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said rotatable member surrounds said attaching member and said attaching member comprises a rod. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said adjustment mechanism further comprises a fluid filled cavity between said frame and said rotatable member. 7. The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising an automated tool configured to rotate said rotatable member. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said adjustment mechanism comprises an automated tool. 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said automated tool comprises an automated fluid supply device configured to supply pressure to said frame to move said frame towards said wheel hub assembly. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said automated tool automatically regulates the preload supplied to said bearing. 11. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising an indicator configured to display a parameter corresponding to said preload. 12. An apparatus for providing a preload to a bearing comprising: a frame supporting an attaching member releasably, threadably, and directly attachable to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle to allow said frame to move relative to said attaching member and in an axial direction along a longitudinal axis of the shaft, wherein a proximal direction extends toward said frame from said attaching member, a distal direction being opposite from the proximal direction and extending toward the attaching member from said frame; a plurality of extensions extending from said frame in the distal direction past said attaching member towards a wheel hub assembly, said extensions being configured to contact at least one of a wheel hub or a bearing of said wheel hub assembly when said attaching member is directly attached to said threaded shaft; and an automated adjustment mechanism configured to move said frame and said plurality of extensions axially towards said wheel hub assembly to apply a preload to a bearing within said wheel hub assembly. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said automated adjustment mechanism comprises an automated fluid supply device configured to supply pressure to said frame to move said frame towards said wheel hub assembly. 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said plurality of extensions is configured to contact said bearing of said wheel hub assembly. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said automated adjustment mechanism automatically regulates the preload supplied to said bearing. 16. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said automated adjustment mechanism automatically regulates the preload supplied to said bearing. 17. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said automated adjustment mechanism comprises a rotatable member.
