Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods for improving the ability of a population of biological agents to compete and survive in a field setting are provided. By improving the population of biological agents, the modified population of agents is able to grow, compete with other microbial strains and fungi, and provide protection for plants from pathogens. In particular, modified biological agents and modified populations of such agents that are herbicide tolerant or resistant are selected or engineered. In this manner, the protection from disease-causing agents is enhanced. Such modified populations of biological agents can be added to soils to prevent fungal pathogens and the diseases they cause promoting plant growth. Therefore, the present invention is useful for enhancing the competitiveness of modified biological agents particularly over other microbial agents which are not herbicide resistant. Compositions of the invention include selected or engineered herbicide resistant biological agents and modified populations of biocontrol agents. These modified biological agents can be used as an inoculant or as a seed coating for plants and seeds.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of producing an improved biocontrol agent, said method comprising in vitro modifying a Pseudomonas bacterium having biocontrol activity and susceptibility to a herbicide to be resistant to the herbicide, wherein the in vitro modifying comprises culturing and selecting the Pseudomonas bacterium in the presence of the herbicide such that the improved biocontrol agent is created by the Pseudomonas bacterium undergoing genetic mutation to develop resistance to the herbicide and survives, thereby producing a culture of the improved biocontrol agent, wherein the herbicide is selected from the group consisting of glyphosate, glufosinate (glutamine synthase inhibitor), sulfonylurea, and imidazolinone herbicides (branched chain amino acid synthesis inhibitors). 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said Pseudomonas bacterium is a Pseudomonas fluorescens bacterium or a Pseudomonas chlororaphis bacterium. 3. A modified biocontrol agent wherein said modified biocontrol agent has been selected in vitro under herbicide pressure and is resistant to said herbicide, wherein said biocontrol agent is a Pseudomonas bacterium having biocontrol activity, and wherein the in vitro selection under herbicide pressure comprises culturing a parent biocontrol agent that is susceptible to the herbicide in the presence of the herbicide such that the modified biocontrol agent is created by the parent biocontrol agent undergoing genetic mutation to develop resistance to the herbicide and survives to produce a culture of the modified biocontrol agent, wherein the herbicide is selected from the group consisting of glyphosate, glufosinate (glutamine synthase inhibitor), sulfonylurea, and imidazolinone herbicides (branched chain amino acid synthesis inhibitors). 4. The modified biocontrol agent of claim 3 , wherein said Pseudomonas bacterium is a Pseudomonas fluorescens bacterium or a Pseudomonas chlororaphis bacterium. 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein said Pseudomonas bacterium comprises a strain deposited as NRRL No. B-50897. 6. The modified biocontrol agent of claim 4 , wherein said Pseudomonas bacterium comprises a strain deposited as NRRL No. B-50897. 7. A modified biocontrol agent comprising a Pseudomonas bacterium strain having biocontrol activity and resistance to glyphosate and deposited as NRRL No. B-50897, wherein a parent of said strain was modified in vitro to have said resistance to glyphosate, wherein the in vitro modification comprises culturing and selecting the parent of said strain in the presence of glyphosate such that the modified biocontrol agent is created the parent undergoing genetic mutation to develop resistance to glyphosate and survives to produce a culture of the modified biocontrol agent.
