What is claimed is: 1. A paint or coating composition, comprising: a film-forming polymer; water; and a compound of formula (I): wherein: R 1 is —H, —CH 2 —CH 3 , —CH 2 —CH═CH 2 , or —CH 2 —CH═CH—CH 2 —CH 3 ; R 2 is —(C 2-10 alkylene)-(OH)q; and q is 1 or 2. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the film-forming polymer is a natural latex, a synthetic latex, or a mixture thereof. 3. The composition of claim 2 , where the film-forming polymer is a synthetic latex. 4. The composition of claim 3 , where the synthetic latex is an acrylic polymer, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, styrene-butadiene rubber, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, or a mixture thereof. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the weight-to-weight ratio of film-forming polymer to compound ranges from 5:1 to 200:1. 6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has no more than 0.5 kg/L of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as measured by Method 24 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. 7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is —H. 8. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is —CH 2 —CH 3 . 9. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 2 is —(C 2-10 alkylene)-OH. 10. The compound of claim 9 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 2 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 3 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 4 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 5 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 6 —OH, —CH(OH)—CH 3 , —CH 2 —CH(OH)—CH 3 , —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH, —CH 2 —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH, or —CH 2 —C(CH 3 ) 2 —CH(OH)—CH(CH 3 ) 2 . 11. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 2 —OH. 12. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 3 —OH. 13. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 4 —OH. 14. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —CH(OH)—CH 3 . 15. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —CH(OH)—CH 3 . 16. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH. 17. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH. 18. The compound of claim 10 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —C(CH 3 ) 2 —CH(OH)—CH(CH 3 ) 2 .
