Polyol esters of metathesized fatty acids are generally disclosed herein. Methods of using such compounds, for example, as cleaning agents, solvents, and coalescents for paints and coatings, are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A compound of formula (I): wherein: R 1 is —H, —CH 2 —CH 3 , —CH 2 —CH═CH 2 , or —CH 2 —CH═CH—CH 2 —CH 3 ; R 2 is —(C 2-10 alkylene)-(OH)q; and q is 1, 2, or 3. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is —H. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is —CH 2 —CH 3 . 4. The compound of claim 1 , wherein q is 1 or 2. 5. The compound of claim 4 , wherein q is 1. 6. The compound of claim 5 , wherein R 2 is —(C 2-10 alkylene)-OH. 7. The compound of claim 6 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 2 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 3 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 4 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 5 —OH, —(CH 2 ) 6 —OH, —CH(OH)—CH 3 , —CH 2 —CH(OH)—CH 3 , —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH, —CH 2 —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH, or —CH 2 —C(CH 3 ) 2 —CH(OH)—CH(CH 3 ) 2 . 8. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 2 —OH. 9. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 3 —OH. 10. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —(CH 2 ) 4 —OH. 11. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —CH(OH)—CH 3 . 12. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —CH(OH)—CH 3 . 13. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH. 14. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —CH(CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH. 15. The compound of claim 7 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —C(CH 3 ) 2 —CH(OH)—CH(CH 3 ) 2 . 16. A paint or coating composition, comprising: a film-forming polymer; water; and a compound of claim 1 . 17. The composition of claim 16 , wherein the film-forming polymer is a natural latex, a synthetic latex, or a mixture thereof. 18. The composition of claim 17 , where the film-forming polymer is a synthetic latex. 19. The composition of claim 16 , wherein the composition has no more than 0.5 kg/L of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as measured by Method 24 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. 20. A method of painting or coating a surface, comprising: providing a surface to be coated or painted; and applying to the surface a composition of claim 16 .
