Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An absorbent article, preferably a disposable absorbent article such as a diaper, is disclosed having an absorbent core which imparts increased wearing comfort to the article and makes it thin and dry. The absorbent core useful for an absorbent article comprises a substrate layer, a discontinuous layer of absorbent material, and a layer of thermoplastic material. A second surface of the discontinuous layer of absorbent material is in at least partial contact with a first surface of the substrate layer. Portions of a second surface of the layer of thermoplastic material are in direct contact with the first surface of the substrate layer and portions of said second surface of the layer of thermoplastic material are in direct contact with a first surface of the discontinuous layer of absorbent material. A process for providing a storage layer for an absorbent core useful in an absorbent article is further disclosed.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A disposable absorbent article comprising: a chassis including a topsheet and a backsheet; and an absorbent core located between the topsheet and the backsheet; wherein the absorbent core comprises a substrate layer; a first discontinuous layer of absorbent material deposited on the substrate layer; a second substrate layer and a second discontinuous layer of absorbent material deposited on the second substrate layer; wherein in the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material comprises first openings and wherein the second discontinuous layer of absorbent material comprises second openings, and wherein the first and second substrate layers are combined together such that the first openings are offset from the second openings. 2. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 , wherein the absorbent core further comprises a thermoplastic material and wherein the thermoplastic material is a hot melt adhesive. 3. The disposable absorbent article of claim 2 , wherein the thermoplastic material comprises a net-like structure. 4. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 , wherein the substrate layer further comprises an auxiliary adhesive. 5. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first openings and/or the second openings comprise a largest span of less than 10 mm. 6. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material comprises absorbent polymer material. 7. The disposable absorbent article of claim 6 wherein the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material further comprises airfelt material. 8. A disposable absorbent article comprising: a chassis including a topsheet and a backsheet; and an absorbent core located between the topsheet and the backsheet; wherein the absorbent core comprises a substrate layer; a first discontinuous layer of absorbent material deposited on the substrate layer; a second substrate layer and a second layer of absorbent material deposited on the second substrate layer; wherein in the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material comprises a first opening disposed between two areas of absorbent material and wherein the first and second substrate layers are combined together such that the first opening faces absorbent material in the second layer of absorbent material. 9. The disposable absorbent article of claim 8 wherein the second layer of absorbent material comprises a discontinuous layer of absorbent material having a second opening, and wherein the first and second substrate layers are combined together such that the second opening faces abosorbent material in the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material. 10. The disposable absorbent article of claim 8 wherein the first openings and/or the second openings comprise a largest span of less than 10 mm. 11. The disposable absorbent article of claim 8 wherein the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material comprises absorbent polymer material. 12. The disposable absorbent article of claim 11 wherein the first discontinuous layer of absorbent material further comprises airfelt material.
