Official abstract text for this publication.
A method of fabricating a fan case for a gas turbine engine defines a metallic ring including an outer surface and an inner surface. A first composite material is assembled about the outer surface of the metallic ring. A second composite material is assembled about the first composite material. The first composite material and the second material are cured about the metallic ring within a tool to form a first subassembly. The first subassembly is removed from the tool. A fan case assembly for a gas turbine engine and a gas turbine engine are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of fabricating a fan case for a gas turbine engine, the method comprising: providing a metallic ring including an outer surface and an inner surface; wrapping a first composite material about the outer surface of the metallic ring; inserting the metallic ring wrapped in the first composite material at an axial position within a cylinder formed from a second composite material that is different than the first composite material; forming a first subassembly by curing the first composite material and the second material about the metallic ring within a tool, wherein the tool applies heat and pressure to the first composite material, the second composite material and the metallic ring; and removing the first subassembly from the tool. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , including assembling at least one of a rub strip or a noise attenuation layer to the inner surface of the metallic ring. 3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second composite material comprises a carbon composite around an outer surface of the first composite material. 4. The method as recited in claim 3 , wherein forming the first subassembly comprises heating the first composite material and the second composite material about the metallic ring within the tool such that thermal expansion of the metallic ring forces the first composite material and the second composite material radially outward against an inner surface of the tool. 5. The method as recited in claim 4 , wherein forming the first subassembly comprises adhering the first composite material to the metallic ring and adhering the second composite material to the first composite material. 6. The method as recited in claim 4 , including cooling the first subassembly within the tool such that the contraction of the metallic ring is constrained by the first composite material and the second composite material. 7. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the metallic ring includes a thermal coefficient of expansion greater than both the first composite material and the second composite material. 8. The method as recited in claim 1 , including attaching a rub strip within the first subassembly to define an inner-most radial surface. 9. The method as recited in claim 1 , including forming at least one attachment flange for securing the fan case to a static structure wherein the at least one attachment flange is formed with the second composite material. 10. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the metallic ring circumscribes an axial length radially outside fan blades. 11. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the tool comprises an autoclave that includes a cavity into which the first subassembly is inserted and an insert that is inserted into an inner diameter of the metallic ring, wherein expansion of the metallic ring by heating exerts an outward radial pressure on the first composite material and the second composite material to create a bond between the metallic ring and the first and second composite structures during curing.
