In one aspect, the invention relates to compounds having the formula: where R 1 -R 6 , a, b, and X are as defined in the specification, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. These compounds have neprilysin inhibition activity. In another aspect, the invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds; methods of using such compounds; and processes and intermediates for preparing such compounds.

What is claimed is: 1. (2R,4R)-5-Biphenyl-4-yl-4-[(5-carboxymethyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carbonyl)amino]-2-hydroxy-pentanoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. (2R,4R)-5-Biphenyl-4-yl-2-hydroxy-4-[(5-hydroxymethyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carbonyl)-amino]-pentanoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 3. (2R,4R)-5-Biphenyl-4-yl-2-hydroxy-4-[(5-methoxymethyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carbonyl)-amino]-pentanoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 4. A pharmaceutical composition comprising the compound of any one of claims 1 - 3 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. 5. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 4 , further comprising an AT 1 receptor antagonist. 6. A method for therapeutically treating hypertension, heart failure, or renal disease, comprising administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of any one of claims 1 - 3 .
