Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A lithium electrochemical cell with increased energy density is described. The electrochemical cell comprises an improved sandwich cathode design with a second cathode active material of a relatively high energy density but of a relatively low rate capability sandwiched between two current collectors and with a first cathode active material having a relatively low energy density but of a relatively high rate capability in contact with the opposite sides of the two current collectors. In addition, a cathode fabrication process is described that increases manufacturing efficiency. The cathode fabrication process comprises a process in which first and second cathode active materials are directly applied to opposite surfaces of a perforated current collector and laminated together. The present cathode design is useful for powering an implantable medical device requiring a high rate discharge application.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for making a cathode, comprising the following steps: a) providing a first current collector having a thickness between first and second major surfaces; b) mixing a first electroactive material selected from the group consisting of CF x , Ag 2 O, Ag 2 O 2 , Ag 2 CrO 4 , MnO 2 , SVO, and mixtures thereof with a first binder and a first solvent to create a first slurry; c) mixing a second electroactive material different than the first electroactive material and selected from the group consisting of SVO, CSVO, V 2 O 5 , MnO 2 , LiCoO 2 , LiNiO 2 , LiMnO 2 , TiS, FeS, FeS 2 , and mixtures thereof with a second binder and a second solvent to create a second slurry; d) applying spaced apart first and second strips of the first slurry to the first major surface of the first current collector, wherein the first and second strips are separated from each other by a first intermediate gap that is devoid of the first slurry, and wherein there are first and second margins extending from the respective first and second strips to opposed lateral edges of the first current collector opposite the first intermediate gap; e) drying the first slurry on the first current collector; f) applying spaced apart third and fourth strips of the second slurry to the second major surface of the first current collector, wherein the third and fourth strips are separated from each other by a second intermediate gap that is devoid of the second slurry, and wherein there are third and fourth margins extending from the respective third and fourth strips to the opposed lateral edges of the second current collector opposite the second intermediate gap; g) drying the second slurry on the first current collector; h) cutting at least one second current collector from the first current collector; i) stacking the first current collector on top of the second current collector so that the first electroactive materials of the respective current collectors contact each other opposite outwardly facing second electroactive material supported on the second major surfaces of the respective first and second current collectors; j) laminating the first and second current collectors together, thereby forming a current collector stack assembly; and k) forming an electrode of a desired shape from the current collector stack assembly with material of the intermediate gaps of the respective first and second current collectors serving as a terminal lead. 2. The method of claim 1 , including selecting the first current collector from the group consisting of stainless steel, titanium, tantalum, platinum, gold, aluminum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, and nickel alloys. 3. The method of claim 1 , including after stacking the first current collector on top of the second current collector with the first and second margins of the first current collector being aligned with the first and second margins of the second current collector, welding the current collectors together at at least one of their aligned margins. 4. The method of claim 1 , including providing a plurality of perforations extending through the thickness of the first current collector where the first and second strips of the first slurry contact the first major surface aligned with the third and fourth strips of the second slurry contacting the second major surface thereof. 5. The method of claim 4 , including providing the first current collector with a percent open area that ranges from about 20 percent to about 30 percent where the plurality of perforations reside. 6. The method of claim 1 , including using a laser or a punch to form the electrode of the desired shape from the current collector stack assembly. 9. The method of claim 1 , including providing the first current collector in a continuous sheet form. 10. The method of claim 1 , including providing the first and second intermediate gaps, and the first, second, third and fourth margins being unperforated. 11. The method of claim 1 , including drying the first and second slurries at a temperature that ranges from about 100° C. to about 130° C. 12.
