The invention presents methods of identifying small molecule compounds that are activators of tumor suppressor protein p53 pathway, and its associated family members p63 and p73, function. The invention is further drawn to methods of killing tumor cells and treating cancers or other conditions requiring activation of the p53 family member pathways and DNA damage response pathways with the small molecules.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of treating cancer, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having the formula: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound is administered in a dose in a range of about 0.001 mg/kg to about 200 mg/kg per day. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound is administered orally, parenterally, subligually, transdermally, rectally, transmucosally, topically, via inhalation, or via buccal administration.
