Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An oral care system comprising a toothbrush and a dispenser is disclosed. In one embodiment, the dispenser comprises a housing having a longitudinal axis and an internal reservoir containing an oral care material; a drive component rotatably disposed within the housing and comprising a drive screw, the drive component being axially retained relative to the housing through mechanical interference; and an elevator coupled to the drive screw so that rotation of the drive component in a first rotational direction causes the elevator to axially advance along the drive screw in a first axial direction to dispense the oral care material from a dispensing orifice.

What is claimed is: 1. An oral care system comprising: a toothbrush and a dispenser detachably coupled to the toothbrush, the dispenser comprising: a housing having a longitudinal axis, an inner surface with plural of axially extending grooves and an internal reservoir containing an oral care material; a collar comprising an axial passageway, a plurality of protuberances extending radially inward into the axial passageway and flanges protruding radially outwardly therefrom where the flanges are received by portions of the plurality of grooves at an end of the housing opposite the toothbrush, the collar being non-rotatably disposed within the housing; an anti-rotation sleeve having radially protruding flanges on an exterior surface thereof, where the radially producing flanges are received by the plurality of grooves on the inner surface of the housing; an actuator; a drive component rotatably disposed within the housing, the drive component comprising a drive screw operably coupled to the actuator such that actuation of the actuator rotates the drive screw, a post at least partially disposed within the axial passageway and being fixed relative to the drive screw, and at least one resilient arm extending radially outward from the post; an elevator non-rotatably coupled to the anti-rotation sleeve; and wherein rotation of the drive component in a first rotational direction causes: (1) the elevator to axially advance along the drive screw in a first axial direction to dispense the oral care material from a dispensing orifice located on the dispenser while the drive screw does not axially translate relative to the housing and the anti-rotation sleeve prevents relative motion between the elevator and the housing; and (2) the at least one resilient arm to move over the plurality of protuberances, the at least one resilient arm deforming when moving over each of the plurality of protuberances and resuming an original state upon passing each of the plurality of protuberances to generate an audible signal. 2. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the drive component comprises first and second flanges that, through mechanical interference with the collar, axially retain the drive component relative to the housing. 3. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the post, the resilient arm, and the drive screw are formed as a singular monolithic component. 4. The oral care system according to claim 3 wherein the toothbrush comprises a cavity, the dispenser at least partially insertable and retractable from the cavity. 5. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of protuberances are arranged in a circumferentially spaced-apart manner about the longitudinal axis, and wherein the plurality of protuberances and the at least one resilient arm are configured so that contact between the at least one resilient arm and the plurality of protuberances prevents rotation of the actuator in a second rotational direction that is opposite the first rotational direction. 6. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the drive screw, the post and the at least one resilient arm are integrally formed as a single unitary component. 7. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the dispenser further comprises an elastomeric applicator coupled to the housing and comprising the dispensing orifice, and wherein the dispensing orifice and the elastomeric applicator are contained within the toothbrush when the dispenser is coupled to the toothbrush. 8. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the post, the resilient arm, and the drive screw are fixed relative to one another. 9. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the dispenser further comprises an extension member non-rotatably disposed within the housing, the extension member coupled to the elevator at one end and threadedly engaged to the drive screw at the other end. 10. The oral care system according to claim 1 wherein the oral care system is a tooth whitening system in which the oral care material comprises a tooth whitening composition. 11. An oral care system comprising: a toothbrush comprising a longitudinal axis, a handle, and a head supported by the handle and including a plurality of tooth engaging elements extending transversely to the longitudinal axis from a front surface of the head oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis; a dispenser detachably coupled to the toothbrush, the dispenser comprising: a housing having a longitudinal axis and an internal reservoir containing an oral care material; a collar comprising an axial passageway, the collar non-rotatably disposed within the housing; a drive component rotatably disposed within the housing, the drive component comprising a drive screw, a post at least partially disposed within the axial passageway of the collar, and at least one flange that, through mechanical interference with the collar, axially retains the drive component relative to the housing; and an elevator threadedly coupled to the drive screw by an extension member having a threaded proximal end and a distal end inserted into an annular groove in a lower surface of the elevator so that rotation of the drive component in a first rotational direction causes the elevator to axially advance along the drive screw in a first axial direction to dispense the oral care material from a dispensing orifice while the drive screw does not axially translate relative to the housing, the annular groove formed between an inner annular wall of the elevator and an outer annular wall of the elevator, the inner annular wall extending axially from the lower surface of the elevator and the outer annular wall extending axially from the lower surface of the elevator, the inner annular wall opposing the outer annular wall, the outer annular wall located radially between the housing and the distal end of the extension member so that the outer annular wall surrounds the distal end of the extension member, the distal end of the extension member located radially between the inner annular wall and the outer annular wall, and the distal end of the extension member having a retention feature extending radially outward which engages a retention groove formed into the outer annular wall of the elevator. 12. The oral care system according to claim 11 wherein the extension member is non-rotatably disposed within the housing, the extension member coupled to the elevator at one end and threadedly engaged to the drive screw at the other end. 13. The oral care system according to claim 11 wherein during rotation of the drive component in the first rotational direction, the elevator axially translates relative to the drive screw in the first axial direction. 14. The oral care system according to claim 11 wherein the drive screw, the post and the at least one flange are integrally formed as a single unitary component. 15. The oral care system according to claim 11 wherein the oral care system is a tooth whitening system in which the oral care material comprises a tooth whitening composition. 16. The oral care system of claim 11 , wherein the extension member is positioned in an anti-rotation sleeve interspersed between the extension member and housing, the anti-rotation sleeve being configured to engage the housing to prevent relative rotation between the anti-rotation sleeve and the housing. 17. An oral care system comprising: a toothbrush comprising a longitudinal axis, a handle, and a head supported by the handle and including a plurality of tooth engaging elements extending transvers
