The invention claimed is: 1. A composition, comprising a mixture of compounds according to formula (I) wherein R 1 is a linear or branched C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, or hydrogen, R 2 is —CH 2 CH 2 R 1 , each G 1 is glucose or xylose, wherein an amount of glucose ranges from 70 to 95 mole-% and an amount of xylose ranges from 5 to 30 mole-%, relative to a total amount of glucose and xylose, and x is a number average value of the G 1 groups contained in the mixture and ranges from 1.1 to 4. 2. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein R 1 is ethyl or n-propyl. 3. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein x ranges from 1.15 to 1.9. 4. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein in a single molecule of the formula (I) with 2 or more G 1 groups, each G1 group is glucose and the G 1 groups are linked in 1,4-position. 5. The composition according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one isomer of a compound of the formula (I), said isomer bearing an alkyl group being isomeric to CH 2 CHR 1 CH 2 CHR 1 . 6. A process of making the composition according to claim 1 , said process comprising reacting a mixture of glucose and xylose or the respective di- or polysaccharides with an alcohol according to formula (II) in the presence of a catalyst: R 1 CH 2 —CH 2 —CHR 1 —CH 2 —OH (II) where R 1 is a linear or branched C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, or hydrogen. 7. An aqueous formulation, comprising the composition according to claim 1 in an amount of 0.05 to 50% by weight. 8. The aqueous formulation according to claim 7 , further comprising at least one by-product or starting material from synthesizing the composition. 9. A process for cleaning a hard surface or fiber, the process comprising contacting the hard surface or fiber or an arrangement of fibers with at least one aqueous formulation containing the composition according to claim 1 . 10. The process according to claim 9 , further comprising degreasing the hard surface or the fiber. 11. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the amount of glucose ranges from 72.5 to 87.5 mole-% and the amount of xylose ranges from 12.5 to 27.5 mole-%, relative to a total amount of glucose and xylose.
