Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A mold component configured to be actuated between: a first configuration in which the mold component comprises a passage that allows passage of fluid (such as air) and prevents passage of the melt; and a second configuration in which the passage is actuated such as to become part of a molding surface.

Therefore, what is to be protected by way of Letters Patent are limited only by the scope of the following claims: 1. A mold component configured to be actuated between: a first configuration in which the mold component comprises a passage that allows passage of fluid and prevents passage of melt; and a second configuration in which the passage is actuated such that: (i) a first portion of the passage becomes part of a molding surface of the mold component, and (ii) a second portion of the passage allows passage of fluid and prevents passage of the melt. 2. The mold component of claim 1 , wherein said first portion of the passage is susceptible to build-up of residue. 3. The mold component of claim 2 , wherein in said second configuration, the first portion of the passage can be flooded with the melt such as to incorporate and remove a residue therefrom. 4. The mold component of claim 1 , wherein, in the second configuration, the passage is configured such that a melt front of the melt stops at a predefined point between the first and second portions of the passage. 5. The mold component of claim 4 , wherein the predefined point is controlled thermally by controlling at least one of a temperature of a cooling fluid and a flow rate of cooling fluid around the predefined point. 6. The mold component of claim 1 , wherein: the first portion of the passage is a primary vent area extending from the molding surface; the second portion of the passage is a secondary vent area in fluid communication with the primary vent area; and with actuation of the mold component from the first configuration to the second configuration, a size of the primary vent area increases and a size of at least part of the secondary vent area remains generally constant such that melt can flow into the primary vent area while being substantially prevented from flowing into the secondary vent area. 7. The mold component of claim 6 , wherein the secondary vent area comprises an apex for substantially preventing flow of melt into the secondary vent area. 8. The mold component of claim 6 , wherein, in the first configuration, the primary vent area and the secondary vent area are sized to define a gap between about 0.03 mm and about 0.05 mm. 9. The mold component of claim 6 , wherein, in the second configuration, the primary vent area is sized to define a gap of about 0.28 mm and the at least part of the secondary vent area is sized to define a gap between about 0.03 mm and about 0.05 mm. 10. The mold component of claim 6 , comprising a first body portion and a second body portion, wherein: each of the first body portion and the second body portion comprises a first surface and a second surface; the first surfaces of the first and second body portions cooperate with each other to define the primary vent area; and the second surfaces of the first and second body portions cooperate with each other to define the secondary vent area. 11. The mold component of claim 10 , wherein the first body portion is a neck ring and the second body portion is a lock ring. 12. The mold component of claim 6 , wherein the primary vent area and the secondary vent area are generally parallel to one another. 13. The mold component of claim 6 , wherein a pocket groove is located between the primary and secondary vent areas and is in fluid communication with the primary and secondary vent areas, the pocket groove acting as a reservoir for rapid evacuation of fluid through the primary vent area. 14. The mold component of claim 13 , wherein the pocket groove is generally triangular.
