A method and apparatus for locating and selecting a colony of microorganisms on a culture dish and identifying microorganisms in said selected colony using MALDI. The method comprises the automated steps of locating and selecting a colony of microorganisms on a culture dish; obtaining a sample of said selected colony of microorganisms; depositing at least some of said sample of said selected colony of microorganisms on a target plate; and transferring said target plate with said sample in an apparatus for performing MALDI for identification of said sample of said selected colony of microorganisms. A sample of a colony of microorganisms is automatically deposited on a depositing spot such that the sample covers at most approximately half of said one of the depositing spots of the target plate. A suspension of a sample of microorganisms is automatically prepared by automatically picking the sample with a picking tool and submerging the picking tool with said sample in a suspension, after which the picking tool is vibrated in vertical sense only to release the sample from the picking tool.

The invention claimed is: 1. An automated apparatus for preparing a suspension of a microbial sample picked from a culture dish, said apparatus comprising: (a) a picking location, said picking location comprising: (i) a stage for receiving a culture dish; (ii) an automated conveyer operable to transport the culture dish to and from the stage; and (iii) a first automated positioning device capable of lateral and vertical movement comprising a pick tool holder, the pick tool holder adapted to releasably engage a picking tool, wherein the first automated positioning device moves laterally to position the pick tool holder above the culture dish, and vertically to raise and lower the pick tool holder; (b) a suspension preparation location, said suspension preparation location comprising: (i) a holder that releasably holds at least one suspension receptacle; (ii) an automatic suspension medium dispenser configured to dispense a suspension medium into the suspension receptacle; and (iii) a turbidity meter comprising a light source and a sensor arranged to transmit light through the suspension in the suspension receptacle for detection by the sensor, wherein a signal from the sensor provides a measure of a concentration of microorganisms in the suspension medium; (c) an automated transferring device that laterally transfers the picking tool from the picking location to the suspension preparation location, and moves the picking tool in a vertical direction such that the picking tool can be received into the suspension receptacle and brought into contact with the suspension medium in the suspension receptacle; (d) a transfer track along which the automated transferring device can be moved laterally; and (e) a controller communicatively connected to the first automated positioning device, the automated transferring device, the automatic suspension medium dispenser and the turbidity meter, wherein the controller automatically operates the movement of the first automated positioning device, the movement of the automated transferring device, the automatic suspension medium dispenser and the turbidity meter. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the turbidity meter light source is a laser. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second automated positioning device that transfers suspension receptacles from a location where new suspension receptacles are retrieved and used suspension receptacles are discarded to the suspension preparation location, wherein the controller is communicatively connected to the second automated positioning device for automatically controlling the transfer of suspension receptacles from the location where new suspension receptacles are retrieved and used suspension tubes are discarded to the suspension preparation location. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the automatic suspension medium dispenser comprises a dispensing nozzle for automatically dispensing a suspension medium in at least one suspension tube. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the picking tool is a pipetting tool. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the pipetting tool comprises a pressurizable chamber and a controlled valve holds an amount of a sample suspension carried by the pipetting tool. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the automated transferring device controlled by the controller is along the transfer track such that the automated transferring device moves from either the picking location or the suspension preparation location to the other of the picking location or the suspension preparation location. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the automated transferring device controlled by the controller is along the transfer track such that the automated transferring device carries the picking tool from the suspension preparation location to a position above a target plate. 9.
