Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An electronic device such as a cover for a portable device or other electronic equipment may have circuitry mounted in a housing. The housing may be formed from layers of material such as fabric and polymer layers. The fabric may be formed from woven polymer yarn. The fabric may be treated with chemicals to improve stain resistance and wear resistance, may be provided with a polymer backing layer, and may receive molded plastic structures. Patterned areas may be woven into the fabric, may be formed by placing coatings on selected portions of the fabric, or may be formed by embroidering or otherwise locally processing the fabric. The patterned areas may form labels for keyboard keys, logos, key trim patterns, and other features for an electronic device. Patterned areas may have locally enhanced light transmission characteristics and may be backlit.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A keyboard, comprising: a printed circuit; an array of keys mounted to the printed circuit, wherein each of the keys comprises a key cap; a fabric layer that covers the array of keys, wherein the fabric layer has light transmissive portions that each overlap a respective one of the keys; and a polymer layer attached to the fabric layer, wherein the polymer layer has openings each of which receives an associated one of the key caps. 2. The keyboard defined in claim 1 wherein each of the keys comprises a switch. 3. The keyboard defined in claim 1 wherein the polymer layer is injection molded onto the fabric layer. 4. The keyboard defined in claim 1 wherein the polymer layer is attached to the fabric layer with adhesive. 5. The keyboard defined in claim 1 wherein the light transmissive portions form alphanumeric labels for the array of keys. 6. The keyboard defined in claim 5 wherein the light transmissive portions of the fabric layer comprise openings in the fabric layer. 7. The keyboard defined in claim 1 wherein the fabric layer comprises woven yarn. 8. The keyboard defined in claim 1 further comprising a water repellant coating on the fabric layer. 9. The keyboard defined in claim 1 further comprising a polymer backing layer on the fabric layer, wherein the polymer backing layer is interposed between the polymer layer and the fabric layer. 10. The keyboard defined in claim 9 wherein the polymer backing layer comprises polyurethane. 11. A keyboard, comprising: an array of keys; a backlight that illuminates the array of keys; and a fabric layer having raised portions that each overlap a respective one of the keys, wherein the raised portions of the fabric layer have openings through which light from the backlight passes to illuminate the array of keys, and wherein the openings form alphanumeric labels for the keys. 12. The keyboard defined in claim 11 further comprising injection molded plastic on the fabric layer. 13. The keyboard defined in claim 12 wherein the injection molded plastic has openings that each receive a respective one of the keys. 14. A keyboard, comprising: an array of keys; woven fabric that overlaps the keys; a first polymer layer having an array of openings, wherein each opening receives a respective one of the keys; and a second polymer layer interposed between the first polymer layer and the woven fabric. 15. The keyboard defined in claim 14 wherein the second polymer layer bonds the first polymer layer to the woven fabric. 16. The keyboard defined in claim 14 wherein the woven fabric has selectively removed portions. 17. The keyboard defined in claim 14 further comprising a water repellant coating on the woven fabric. 18. The keyboard defined in claim 14 wherein the woven fabric has an array of raised portions each of which overlaps a respective one of the keys, the keyboard further comprising: a backlight, wherein each raised portion of the woven fabric has openings through which light from the backlight passes.
