Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method, apparatus and program product utilize a graphical interface to facilitate operator interaction with a load wrapping apparatus, particularly in connection with setting up a wrap profile. The graphical interface may incorporate a graphical depiction of a load, along with graphical depictions of both the number of layers of packaging material and the wrap force associated with a given wrap profile, with the graphical depictions of each of the number of layers of packaging material and the wrap force being capable of being dynamically updated in response to changes made by an operator to a wrap profile. The graphical depictions therefore provide a visual interface to assist an operator who may have limited expertise in setting up a load wrapping apparatus.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of setting up a wrap profile prior to wrapping a load on a load support with packaging material dispensed from a packaging material dispenser through relative rotation between the packaging material dispenser and the load support, the method comprising: causing a graphical depiction of at least a portion of a load to be wrapped to be displayed on an operator interface; causing a number of layers of packaging material specified by the wrap profile to be displayed graphically in the graphical depiction; and modifying the graphical depiction in response to user input that modifies the wrap profile. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the number of layers of packaging material to be displayed graphically includes displaying a number of parallel bars corresponding to the number of layers of packaging material to be displayed adjacent to the graphical depiction of the load, wherein modifying the graphical depiction includes changing the number of parallel bars displayed adjacent to the graphical depiction of the load in response to modifying the number of layers of packaging material specified by the wrap profile. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the parallel bars extend substantially along a height of the graphical depiction of the load, the method further comprising, in response to user input to add a band to the wrap profile, modifying the graphical depiction of the load to display a parallel bar corresponding to the band adjacent the number of parallel bars and disposed at an elevation associated with the band. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing a wrap force specified by the wrap profile to be displayed graphically in the graphical depiction. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein causing the wrap force to be displayed graphically includes controlling a display characteristic of the load in the graphical depiction based upon the wrap force specified by the wrap profile, wherein modifying the graphical depiction includes varying the display characteristic of the load in response to modifying the wrap force specified by the wrap profile. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the display characteristic includes one or more of a color, a shading, or a pattern. 7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising, in response to user input to vary a wrap force proximate a top or bottom of the load, modifying the graphical depiction of the load by varying the display characteristic in a top or bottom portion of the load in the graphical depiction. 8. The method of claim 5 , further comprising causing a legend to be displayed, wherein the legend displays a plurality of values of the display characteristic corresponding respectively to a plurality of wrap forces. 9. The method of claim 4 , wherein modifying the graphical depiction in response to user input that modifies the wrap profile includes, in response to user input that modifies the wrap force specified by the wrap profile: modifying the number of layers of packaging material specified by the wrap profile; and modifying the display of the number of layers of packaging material in response to modifying the number of layers specified by the wrap profile. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein modifying the number of layers includes determining the modified number of layers based upon a load containment force requirement specified in the wrap profile and the modified wrap force. 11. The method of claim 4 , wherein modifying the graphical depiction in response to user input that modifies the wrap profile includes, in response to user input that modifies the number of layers specified by the wrap profile: modifying the wrap force specified by the wrap profile; and modifying the display of the wrap force in response to modifying the wrap force specified by the wrap profile. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein modifying the wrap force includes determining the modified wrap force based upon a load containment force requirement specified in the wrap profile and the modified number of layers. 13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after modifying the graphical depiction, initiating a wrapping operation to wrap the load with packaging material based upon the wrap profile. 14. An apparatus, comprising: a processor; and program code configured upon execution by the processor to control a load wrapping apparatus of the type configured to wrap a load on a load support with packaging material dispensed from a packaging material dispenser through relative rotation between the packaging material dispenser and the load support by: causing a graphical depiction of at least a portion of a load to be wrapped to be displayed on an operator interface; causing a number of layers of packaging material specified by the wrap profile to be displayed graphically in the graphical depiction; and modifying the graphical depiction in response to user input that modifies the wrap profile. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the processor is in a controller of the load wrapping apparatus, and wherein the apparatus further comprises a packaging material dispenser for dispensing packaging material to the load. 16. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the processor is in a device external to the load wrapping apparatus. 17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the device is a mobile device, a single-user computer or a multi-user computer. 18. A program product, comprising: a non-transitory computer readable medium; and program code stored on the non-transitory computer readable medium and configured to control a load wrapping apparatus of the type configured to wrap a load on a load support with packaging material dispensed from a packaging material dispenser through relative rotation between the packaging material dispenser and the load support, wherein the program code is configured to control the load wrapping apparatus by: causing a graphical depiction of at least a portion of a load to be wrapped to be displayed on an operator interface; causing a number of layers of packaging material specified by the wrap profile to be displayed graphically in the graphical depiction; and modifying the graphical depiction in response to user input that modifies the wrap profile. 19. A method of configuring a wrap profile prior to wrapping a load on a load support with packaging material dispensed from a packaging material dispenser through relative rotation between the packaging material dispenser and the load support, the method comprising: causing a graphical depiction of at least a portion of a load to be wrapped to be displayed on an operator interface; causing a combined thickness of packaging material specified by the wrap profile to be displayed graphically in the graphical depiction; and modifying the graphical depiction in response to user input that modifies the wrap profile. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the combined thickness is specified in the wrap profile as a minimum number of layers of packaging material to apply throughout a contiguous region of the load. 21. An apparatus, comprising: a processor; and program code configured upon execution by the processor to control a load wrapping apparatus of the type configured to wrap a load on a load support with packaging material dispensed from a packaging material dispenser through relative rotation between the packaging material dispenser and the load support, wherein the program code is configured to cause a graphical depiction of at least a portion of a
