Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A patient support includes a frame, a patient support surface supported at the frame, a display incorporated into the frame, and a user interface incorporated into the frame. The patient support frame includes a controller incorporated into the frame, which has a plurality of prompts stored therein. The user interface is in communication with the controller and may be used to select a selected prompt from the plurality of prompts stored in the controller. When a prompt is selected, the controller generates a display image or text associated with the selected prompt at the display in response to a passage of time or an input to provide a visual prompt to the user.

We claim: 1. A patient support apparatus comprising: a plurality of components forming said patient support apparatus; a device associated with said patient support apparatus to sense or control a parameter of at least one component of said plurality of components; a patient support controller in communication with said device, said patient support controller mounted at said patient support apparatus; a display mounted at said patient support apparatus, said patient support controller in communication with said display; and a user interface in communication with said patient support controller, said user interface operable to select said parameter of said at least one component for display at said display and to adjust said parameter, wherein said patient support controller is operable to monitor said device and to generate a dynamic icon when selected via said user interface, said dynamic icon comprising a graphical representation of said at least one component at said display, said graphical representation being associated with said parameter, wherein said dynamic icon changes in response to a user input at said user interface, wherein the dynamic icon provides visual feedback of adjustment to the parameter responsive to said user input. 2. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of sensors associated with said patient support apparatus to sense a plurality of conditions of said patient support apparatus, and said user interface being operable to select one of said plurality of conditions, and, when a selected condition is selected, said patient support controller monitoring said selected condition, and said patient support controller generating a display at said display when said selected condition occurs. 3. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said display comprises a touch screen. 4. The patient support apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein said patient support controller generates a screen image at said touch screen, said screen image including a region forming said user interface. 5. The patient support apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said display comprises a touch screen, and said patient support controller generating a screen image at said touch screen, said screen image including a plurality of regions forming a menu for said plurality of conditions. 6. The patient support apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said user interface comprises a first user interface and a second user interface, said second user interface for selecting an alarm setting for said selected condition, said alarm setting being stored in said patient support controller, and, when said alarm setting is selected, said patient support controller actuating said alarm when said selected condition occurs. 7. The patient support apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein said patient support controller generates a second screen image at said display, said second screen image having a plurality of regions, said regions of said second screen image providing a menu of options relative to said alarm setting. 8. The patient support apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said sensors comprise a plurality of load cells, said load cells in communication with said patient support controller, and said patient support controller using signals from said load cells to determine whether the patient support apparatus is occupied or not occupied. 9. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a side rail and a side rail sensor to detect whether the side rail is lowered or not lowered, and said patient support controller using signals from said side rail sensor to determine a status of the side rail and displaying said status at said display. 10. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a brake and a brake sensor to detect whether said brake is on or off, and said patient support controller using a signal from said brake sensor to determine a status of the brake and displaying said status at said display. 11. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one component comprises a mattress. 12. The patient support apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein said parameter comprises the firmness of the mattress. 13. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one component comprises a deck with articulatable deck sections. 14. The patient support apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said parameter comprises an angle of at least one of said articulatable deck sections. 15. The patient support apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said parameter comprises a height of said deck. 16. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , said plurality of components including a frame, said frame supporting a patient support surface and a footboard, said display mounted in said footboard. 17. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said device comprises a sensor, said plurality of components including a deck with a head section, said at least one component comprising said head section, and said patient support controller determining an angle of said head section based at least in part on said sensor. 18. The patient support apparatus according to claim 17 , further comprising a second sensor, said second sensor sensing a height of said deck, and said user interface operable to adjust said height of deck, and said patient support controller operable to display said height at said display. 19. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an indicator to indicate whether the patient support apparatus is in a desired state. 20. The patient support apparatus according to claim 19 , wherein said indicator is operable to generate light with a first color when the patient support apparatus is in a desired state and operable to generate light with a second color different than the first color when the patient support apparatus is in an undesired state. 21. The patient support apparatus according to claim 20 , wherein said indicator is operable to indicate a bed exit status. 22. The patient support apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the graphical representation depicts the angle of said head section. 23. The patient support apparatus according to claim 18 , wherein the graphical representation depicts the height of said deck. 24. A patient support apparatus comprising: a frame to support a patient support surface and a patient; a footboard coupled to said frame; a device associated with said patient support apparatus to monitor or control a plurality of parameters associated with said patient support apparatus; a patient support controller in communication with said device, said patient support controller mounted at said patient support apparatus; a display mounted at said footboard, said patient support controller in communication with said display, wherein said patient support controller is operable to generate a dynamic icon at said display; a first alert light positioned adjacent a first corner of a foot end of the frame; a second alert light positioned adjacent a second corner of the foot end of the frame; and a user interface in communication with said patient support controller, said user interface operable to monitor a first parameter and to adjust a second parameter, wherein the first alert light and the second alert light are
