Official abstract text for this publication.
A patient support apparatus includes a deck, a plurality of side rails, a control panel, and a plurality of subsystems, such as a bed exit system that detects when a patient may exit from the support apparatus, or a lifting mechanism to raise and lower the deck. A controller is in communication with the control panel and is adapted to monitor conditions regarding the side rails and/or the other subsystems. At least one lamp is also provided on the patient support apparatus that is adapted to be illuminated in a first manner when a plurality of monitored conditions remain in a desired state, and in a second manner when at least one of the plurality of monitored conditions changes to an undesired state.

What is claimed is: 1. A bed comprising: a deck for supporting a patient; a plurality of side rails movable between raised and lowered positions; a lifting mechanism adapted to raise and lower said deck; a bed exit system adapted to detect a patient's exit from the bed, the bed exit system including a plurality of load cells adapted to support said deck; a control panel including a first control for controlling movement of said deck and a second control for arming the bed exit system; a lamp; a third control; and a controller in communication with said control panel via a controller area network (CAN), said controller adapted to monitor conditions regarding at least two of said bed exit system, said lifting mechanism, and said plurality of side rails; said controller adapted to begin monitoring the conditions in response to activation of said third control, said controller further adapted to illuminate said lamp in a first manner if all of the monitored conditions remain in a desired state and in a second manner if any one or more of the monitored conditions change out of the desired state. 2. The bed of claim 1 wherein said controller is adapted to monitor conditions regarding all three of said bed exit system, said lifting mechanism, and said plurality of side rails. 3. The bed of claim 2 wherein said controller is adapted to begin monitoring all three of said bed exit system, said lifting mechanism, and said plurality of side rails in response to activation of said third control. 4. The bed of claim 3 wherein said third control is located on said control panel. 5. The bed of claim 1 further including: a plurality of wheels adapted to allow said bed to roll; and a brake for resisting movement of at least one of said plurality of wheels; wherein said controller is further adapted include in the monitored conditions—in addition to the conditions regarding at least two of said bed exit system, said lifting mechanism, and said plurality of side rails—a status of said brake. 6. The bed of claim 5 wherein said controller is adapted to begin monitoring said status of said brake, said bed exit system, said lifting mechanism, and said plurality of side rails in response to activation of said third control. 7. The bed of claim 1 wherein said deck includes a Fowler portion adapted to be angularly adjustable; and wherein said controller is further adapted to include in the monitored conditions a status of said Fowler portion. 8. The bed of claim 1 wherein said control panel is positioned at a footboard of said bed. 9. The bed of claim 1 wherein said lamp is positioned adjacent a foot end of said bed. 10. The bed of claim 1 wherein said lamp is a normal lamp and said first manner of illumination includes illuminating said lamp with a green color. 11. The bed of claim 1 wherein said lamp is an alert lamp and said second manner of illumination includes illuminating said lamp with an amber color. 12. The bed of claim 1 further including transmitting bed bay location information from said bed to a remote location. 13. The bed of claim 1 further including a receiver adapted to detect wireless signals from a transmitter, said wireless signals providing information used to identify in what room said bed is located. 14. The bed of claim 1 wherein said deck includes an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper portion adapted to be angularly adjustable; and wherein said controller is further adapted to allow a user to physically configure said upper portion to a desired angle and then activate monitoring of the upper portion, said controller causing a change in an illumination state of said lamp if the angle of said upper portion changes from the desired angle.
