Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An orthopedic assembly may include an orthopedic device, an anchor, and a locking mechanism. The orthopedic device can be a plate member having an aperture that is configured to receive the anchor. The anchor can include a head, neck and shank portion. The head portion can include a plurality of arms separated by grooves that are capable of splaying. The assembly is configured such that when the locking mechanism is inserted into the head portion, this causes expansion of the arms of the head. This expansion locks and secures the anchor to the orthopedic device. Various instruments are provided that can deliver the locking mechanism to the anchor, and can provide impact to lock functionality.

What is claimed is: 1. An orthopedic assembly comprising: a plate member having an upper surface and a lower surface, and an aperture extending through the upper surface and the lower surface; an anchor received within the aperture, the anchor comprising a head portion, a neck portion and a shank portion, wherein at least a portion of the shank portion includes inner threads, wherein the head portion, neck portion and shank portion are part of a unitary body such that no portion is removable from another; and a locking mechanism received within the anchor, the locking mechanism comprising a head and a shaft having outer threads, wherein the outer threads of the locking mechanism are configured to engage the inner threads of the shank portion, wherein the locking mechanism is configured to move from a first installed position with the locking mechanism received in the head portion of the anchor to a second installed position to expand the head portion of the anchor, thereby securing the anchor to the plate member, and wherein the head portion of the anchor comprises a plurality of resilient quadrants having inner reliefs positioned along an inner surface of each of the resilient quadrants, and when the head of the locking mechanism is in the second installed position and positioned within the inner reliefs, the resilient quadrants of the anchor retract radially inward to capture the locking mechanism therein. 2. The orthopedic assembly of claim 1 , wherein the anchor comprises four resilient quadrants. 3. The orthopedic assembly of claim 2 , wherein each of the quadrants includes one of the inner reliefs. 4. The orthopedic assembly of claim 3 , wherein the head of the locking mechanism is designed to contact the inner reliefs of the four quadrants. 5. The orthopedic assembly of claim 1 , wherein the anchor comprises relief cuts. 6. The orthopedic assembly of claim 5 , wherein the locking mechanism comprises a flange member configured to fit within the relief cuts. 7. The orthopedic assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the locking mechanism is tapered. 8. The orthopedic assembly of claim 1 , wherein the locking mechanism and anchor are preassembled such that they can be delivered to surgical site simultaneously. 9. The orthopedic assembly of claim 8 , wherein the shaft of the locking mechanism is tapered. 10. The orthopedic assembly of claim 1 , wherein the head portion of the anchor includes one or more recesses formed on an outer surface of the plurality of resilient quadrants, the one or more recesses configured to provide a region that can be gripped by an insertion instrument. 11. The orthopedic assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the resilient quadrants is separated from another by a slit, and one or more recesses are formed on an outer surface of the plurality of resilient quadrants and positioned between adjacent slits. 12. An orthopedic assembly comprising: a plate member having an upper surface and a lower surface, and an aperture extending through the upper surface and the lower surface; an anchor received within the aperture, the anchor comprising a head portion, a neck portion and a shank portion, wherein the head portion comprises resilient quadrants capable of radial expansion, wherein the head portion, neck portion and shank portion are part of a unitary body such that no portion is removable from another; and a locking mechanism received within the anchor, the locking mechanism comprising a head and a shaft having outer threads, wherein the outer threads of the locking mechanism are configured to engage the inner threads of the shank portion, wherein the locking mechanism is configured to move from a first installed position with the locking mechanism received in the head portion of the anchor to a second installed position to expand the head portion of the anchor, thereby securing the anchor to the plate member, and wherein the resilient quadrants include inner reliefs positioned along an inner surface of each of the resilient quadrants, and when the head of the locking mechanism is in the second installed position and positioned within the inner reliefs, the resilient quadrants of the anchor retract radially inward to capture the locking mechanism therein. 13. The orthopedic assembly of claim 12 , wherein the plate member comprises a compression plate. 14. The orthopedic assembly of claim 12 , further comprising a spacer body that is implanted along with the plate member and the anchor. 15. The orthopedic assembly of claim 12 , wherein each of the resilient quadrants is separated from another by a slit. 16. The orthopedic assembly of claim 12 , wherein the locking mechanism comprises a flanged portion. 17. The orthopedic assembly of claim 16 , wherein the flanged portion extends around an entire circumference of the locking mechanism. 18. The orthopedic assembly of claim 17 , wherein the flanged portion is retained in the inner reliefs only when in the second installed position. 19. The orthopedic assembly of claim 12 , wherein the locking mechanism and anchor are preassembled such that they can be delivered to surgical site simultaneously.
