The invention claimed is: 1. A composition comprising at least one carbonaceous material and at least one metal lignosulfonate, wherein the at least one metal lignosulfonate is selected from calcium, barium, potassium, magnesium, and strontium lignosulfonates, and the metal ion of the at least one metal lignosulfonate is present in an amount ranging from 0.5 wt. % to 3 wt. % relative to the total weight of the at least one carbonaceous material. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises composite particles comprising the at least one carbonaceous material and the at least one metal lignosulfonate. 3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is in the form of a powder or a pellet. 4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one carbonaceous material is interspersed with the at least one metal lignosulfonate. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one metal lignosulfonate comprises calcium lignosulfonate. 6. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one lead-containing material. 7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the lead-containing material is selected from lead, PbO, leady oxide, Pb 3 O 4 , Pb 2 O, and Pb SO 4 , hydroxides, acids, and metal complexes thereof. 8. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one organic molecule expander that is different from the at least one metal lignosulfonate. 9. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising BaSO 4 . 10. An electrode comprising an electrode plate coated with the composition claim 1 . 11. A lead acid battery comprising the electrode of claim 10 . 12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises the at least one carbonaceous material present in an amount ranging from 40% to 45% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. 13. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one metal lignosulfonate is present in an amount ranging from 5-10% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. 14. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising water in an amount ranging from 45-55% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition.
