Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An HVAC system may include a VAV box including a damper movable between a first damper position and a second damper position and an HVAC controller that is mounted remotely from the VAV box. The HVAC controller may be configured to control the VAV box in accordance with a temperature set point entered into the HVAC controller and may be programmed with a test and balance procedure. In some cases, the HVAC controller may also be programmed with functionality that facilitates an installer or other technician in configuring and/or reconfiguring the VAV box. This may include providing a user interface that supports a test and balance procedure of the VAV box. Such functionality may be user-accessible via the user interface of the HVAC controller, and in some cases, may be used to drive the damper of the VAV box between various damper positions as well as perform other functionality.

We claim: 1. An HVAC system comprising: a VAV box including a damper movable between a first damper position and a second damper position, the VAV box configured to provide variable amounts of conditioned air to one or more downstream air vents; and an HVAC controller mounted remotely from the VAV box, the HVAC controller configured to control the VAV box in accordance with a temperature set point entered into the HVAC controller; wherein the HVAC controller is further configured to instruct the damper to drive between the first damper position and the second damper position during a test and balance procedure initiated at the HVAC controller, wherein the test and balance procedure further includes identifying appropriate damper positions for various desired air flow values for use during subsequent operation of the VAV box. 2. The HVAC system of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to initiate the test and balance procedure in response to a user input at the HVAC controller. 3. The HVAC system of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to initiate the test and balance procedure in response to a calendar reminder programmed into the HVAC controller. 4. The HVAC system of claim 2 , wherein the HVAC controller comprises a touch screen interface and the test and balance procedure is accessed via the touch screen interface. 5. The HVAC system of claim 1 , wherein the two or more damper positions include the first damper position and the second damper position, and the first damper position represents a minimum damper open position and the second damper position represents a maximum damper open position. 6. The HVAC system of claim 5 , wherein the test and balance procedure initiated at the HVAC controller further comprises: driving the damper to a predetermined damper position between the first damper position and the second damper position; holding the damper at the predetermined damper position; obtaining an indication of air flow through the VAV box at the predetermined damper position; and releasing the damper from the predetermined damper position. 7. The HVAC system of claim 5 , wherein the test and balance procedure initiated at the HVAC controller comprises: driving the damper to the minimum damper open position; obtaining an indication of minimum air flow through the VAV box; driving the damper to the maximum damper open position; and obtaining an indication of maximum air flow through the VAV box. 8. An HVAC controller configured to control a VAV box that includes a damper having two or more damper positions and that is configured to provide variable amounts of conditioned air to one or more downstream air vents, the HVAC controller comprising: a temperature sensor configured to sense a temperature proximate the HVAC controller; a user interface configured to display the sensed temperature and to enable a user to input a temperature set point; and a controller operatively coupled to the user interface and the temperature sensor, the controller is configured to regulate operation of the VAV box in accordance with the sensed temperature and the temperature set point; wherein the HVAC controller is programmed to support a test and balance procedure usable for configuring the VAV box, the test and balance procedure including driving the damper of the VAV box to each of two or more damper positions, and determining appropriate damper positions for various desired air flow values for use during subsequent operation of the VAV box; and wherein the test and balance procedure is user-accessible via the user interface. 9. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , wherein the user interface comprises a touch screen interface. 10. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , wherein the HVAC controller is programmed to include, in the test and balance procedure, a procedure for: driving the damper to a predetermined damper position; holding the damper at the predetermined damper position; obtaining an indication of air flow through the VAV box at the predetermined damper position; and releasing the damper from the predetermined damper position. 11. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , wherein the HVAC controller is programmed to include, in the test and balance procedure, a procedure for: driving the damper to a minimum damper position; obtaining an indication of minimum air flow through the VAV box; driving the damper to a maximum damper position; and obtaining an indication of maximum air flow through the VAV box. 12. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , further comprising a humidity sensor. 13. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , further comprising a carbon dioxide sensor. 14. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , further configured to regulate operation of the VAV box in accordance with the sensed temperature and a time-varying temperature set point. 15. The HVAC controller of claim 8 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to regulate operation of two or more VAV boxes, and the HVAC controller is programmed with a test and balance procedure usable for configuring each of the two or more VAV boxes.
