Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A variable speed transmission is disposed in a housing of a work vehicle, wherein the housing includes an external mounting surface. At least one axle is driven by the variable speed transmission and extends from the transaxle housing. An operator handle and the prime mover are mounted directly to external surfaces of the transaxle housing to provide a frameless vehicle. The transmission may also drive a power take-off assembly, which is also supported by the transaxle housing, to drive a work tool.

We claim: 1. A work vehicle comprising: a transaxle housing having an external surface and an external mounting surface formed as part of the external surface; a variable speed transmission disposed in the transaxle housing; at least one axle driven by the variable speed transmission and extending from the transaxle housing; an operator handle mounted directly to and supported by the external surface of the transaxle housing; and a prime mover mounted directly to and supported by the external mounting surface, wherein the prime mover is configured to drive the variable speed transmission and the prime mover is supported only by the transaxle housing. 2. The work vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the operator handle comprises a first operator handle mounted directly to a first side of the transaxle housing and a second operator handle mounted directly to a second side of the transaxle housing, opposite the first side, wherein the first operator handle and the second operator handle are supported only by the transaxle housing. 3. The work vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one axle comprises a first axle driven by the variable speed transmission and extending from a first side of the transaxle housing and a second axle driven by the variable speed transmission and extending from an opposing second side of the transaxle housing. 4. A drive assembly for use with a prime mover, the drive assembly comprising: a rotational input driven by the prime mover and extending into a housing to drive a transmission disposed in the housing, the rotational input having a first axis of rotation; and a power take off assembly at least partially disposed in the housing and comprising: a power take off shaft extending into the housing and driven by a carrier, the power take off shaft having a second axis of rotation; a cage driven by the rotational input and having an internal gear form engaging a first plurality of clutch plates; a second plurality of clutch plates interleaved with the first plurality of clutch plates, wherein the carrier is engaged to and selectively driven by the second plurality of clutch plates; a clutch mechanism operable to force the first plurality of clutch plates into frictional engagement with the second plurality of clutch plates to transmit a rotational force of the cage to the carrier; and wherein the clutch mechanism comprises an activation plate engaged to a cam shaft and disposed axially about the power take off shaft, and the activation plate is capable of movement axially along the second axis of rotation in a first direction to move a thrust member into engagement with the first plurality of clutch plates and the second plurality of clutch plates to enable the transmission of the rotational force of the cage to the carrier. 5. The drive assembly of claim 4 , further comprising a brake wear ring and a brake plate, wherein the brake plate is disposed along the second axis of rotation and sandwiched between the activation plate and the brake wear ring. 6. The drive assembly of claim 5 , further comprising a spring disposed about a portion of the carrier to bias the brake plate to an engaged position where it engages the brake wear ring to provide a braking force to the brake wear ring. 7. The drive assembly of claim 4 , wherein the second axis of rotation is perpendicular to the first axis of rotation. 8. The drive assembly of claim 4 , wherein the housing comprises a main housing portion and a cover attached thereto, wherein the power take off shaft extends through the cover. 9. The drive assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a brake wear ring disposed against the cover; and a brake plate disposed along the second axis of rotation and sandwiched between the activation plate and the brake wear ring. 10. The drive assembly of claim 4 , wherein the rotational input comprises an input tube, and a first bevel gear is engaged to and driven by the input tube, and wherein the first bevel gear drives a second bevel gear engaged to the cage. 11. A drive assembly for use with a prime mover, the drive assembly comprising: a housing comprising a main housing portion and a cover attached thereto; a rotational input driven by the prime mover and extending into the housing to drive a transmission disposed in the housing, the rotational input having a first axis of rotation; a power take off shaft extending into the housing and having a second axis of rotation that is perpendicular to the first axis of rotation; and an input gear driven by the rotational input and driving a clutch assembly, the clutch assembly comprising: a carrier engaged to and driving the power take off shaft; a clutch mechanism movable between an engaged position where the carrier is engaged to and driven by the input gear and a disengaged position where the carrier is disengaged from the input gear; and an activation plate engaged to a cam shaft, wherein the activation plate is disposed axially about the power take off shaft, and the activation plate is capable of movement axially along the second axis of rotation in a first direction to engage the clutch mechanism. 12. The drive assembly of claim 11 , further comprising a brake wear ring and a brake plate disposed along the second axis of rotation and sandwiched between the activation plate and the brake wear ring. 13. The drive assembly of claim 12 , wherein the brake wear ring is disposed against the cover. 14. The drive assembly of claim 12 , wherein the transmission comprises a hydraulic transmission having a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor being rotatably disposed on a center section for separately driving a pair of rotatable output axles extending out opposite sides of the housing. 15. The drive assembly of claim 11 , wherein the transmission is separately driving a pair of rotatable output axles extending out opposite sides of the housing. 16. The drive assembly of claim 11 , wherein the rotational input comprises an input tube, and a first bevel gear is engaged to and driven by the input tube, and wherein the first bevel gear drives a second bevel gear engaged to the clutch assembly. 17. The drive assembly of claim 11 , wherein the cover comprises a bolt circle for attaching an auxiliary equipment module thereto. 18. A drive assembly for use with a prime mover, the drive assembly comprising: a rotational input driven by the prime mover and extending into a housing to drive a transmission disposed in the housing and driving at least one output axle, the rotational input having a first axis of rotation; and a power take off assembly at least partially disposed in the housing and comprising: a carrier; a cage driven by the rotational input and having an internal gear form engaging a first plurality of clutch plates; a second plurality of clutch plates interleaved with the first plurality of clutch plates, wherein the carrier is engaged to and selectively driven by the second plurality of clutch plates; a clutch mechanism operable to force the first plurality of clutch plates into frictional engagement with the second plurality of clutch plates to transmit a rotational force of the cage to the carrier; and a power take off shaft extending into the housing and driven by the carrier, the power take off shaft having a second axis of rotation, wherein the power take off shaft is separately engageable to the rotational input independent of the at least one output axle. 19.
