A method of operating a medical device, comprising the following steps: (a) electrically connecting a power device having a processor to the medical device, wherein the power device comprises at least one battery configured to provide operational power to the medical device, wherein electrically connecting the power device to the medical device includes connecting an electrical connection feature of the power device to a complementary electrical connection feature of the medical device; (b) sensing with the power device at least one characteristic of the medical device, wherein sensing the at least one characteristic of the medical device comprises providing partial power to the medical device; (c) after sensing the at least one characteristic of the medical device, adjusting with the processor one or more characteristics of the electrical connection feature of the power device based on the at least one sensed characteristic of the medical device such that the electrical connection features of the power device and medical device are operationally compatible; and (d) operating the power device according to an operational profile associated with the medical device. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of comparing the at least one sensed characteristic of the medical device to at least one known characteristic associated with at least one known power device. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of comparing comprises accessing a database including a plurality of known characteristics associated with a plurality of known medical devices or a plurality of known power devices. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sensing the at least one characteristic of the medical device further comprises the following steps: (i) sending a signal to the medical device from the power device; and (ii) observing a response of the medical device receiving the signal. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of sending a signal comprises sending an electrical signal, wherein a voltage of the electrical signal sent is lower than a voltage required for operating the medical device. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing data associated with a response of the medical device, wherein the data is stored in the power device. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein sensing with the power device the at least one characteristic of the medical device further comprises detecting whether the medical device is drawing a predetermined amount of current from the power device; wherein when the medical device is drawing the predetermined amount of current, the method further comprises setting voltage and current limits at operational levels associated with the operational profile; wherein when the medical device is not drawing the predetermined amount of current, the method further comprises adjusting a polarity of the power device. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein when the medical device is not drawing the predetermined amount of current the method further comprises repeating the detecting step of claim 7 after adjusting the polarity, wherein during the repeated detecting step if the medical device is still not drawing the predetermined amount of current the method further comprises indicating an error to a user. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein adjusting the polarity of the power device comprises adjusting the polarity with the processor. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of connecting the power device to the medical device further comprises connecting a battery pack to the medical device. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sensing at least one characteristic of the medical device further comprises sensing metallic structures present on the medical device with a sensing device of the power device. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sensing the at least one characteristic of the medical device comprises sensing a polarity of the electrical connection feature of the medical device, wherein the step of adjusting or maintaining one or more characteristics of the electrical connection feature of the power device comprises changing a polarity of the electrical connection feature of the power device to complement the polarity of the electrical connection feature of the medical device. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sensing at least one characteristic of the medical device further comprises sensing a shape of a receptacle of the medical device that is configured to receive the power device. 14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of: (a) monitoring usage data of the medical device and/or the power device; and (b) storing the usage data. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising transmitting the usage data to a centralized system. 16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sensing at least one characteristic of the medical device further comprises detecting whether a reverse polarity protection circuit has been activated. 17. A method of operating a medical device with a power device, wherein the power device includes a battery, a processor, and a first electrical connection feature, wherein the medical device includes a second electrical connection feature, the method comprising: (a) electrically connecting the first electrical connection feature of the power device with the second electrical connection feature of the medical device; (b) sending an electrical signal from the power device to the medical device, and receiving a return electrical signal with the processor of the power device; (c) based on the return electrical signal received by the processor, determining with the processor an amount of electrical current being drawn by the medical device from the power device; (d) comparing the amount of electrical current being drawn by the medical device to a predetermined amount of electrical current; (e) when the amount of electrical current being drawn by the medical device differs from the predetermined amount of electrical current, determining with the processor that a polarity of the first electrical connection feature of the power device differs from a polarity of the second electrical connection feature of the medical device; and (f) altering with the processor the polarity of the first electrical connection feature. 18.
