Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Upon detection of a trigger, such as the exceeding of an error threshold or the direction of a user, a diagnostic link system enters a diagnostic information transmission mode. This diagnostic information transmission mode allows for two modems to exchange diagnostic and/or test information that may not otherwise be exchangeable during normal communication. The diagnostic information transmission mode is initiated by transmitting an initiate diagnostic link mode message to a receiving modem accompanied by a cyclic redundancy check (CRC). The receiving modem determines, based on the CRC, if a robust communications channel is present. If a robust communications channel is present, the two modems can initiate exchange of the diagnostic and/or test information. Otherwise, the transmission power of the transmitting modem is increased and the initiate diagnostic link mode message re-transmitted to the receiving modem until the CRC is determined to be correct.

What is claimed is: 1. A multicarrier transceiver comprising: a transmitter portion of the transceiver and a receiver portion of the transceiver operable to complete an initialization procedure and operable to enter into a steady state communication mode in which user data is transmitted and received a receiver portion of the transceiver operable to determine whether a predetermined error threshold has been exceeded during the steady state communication mode, wherein the predetermined error threshold is based on cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors during the steady state communication mode; the receiver portion of the transceiver further operable to measure a frequency domain received idle channel noise on each of a plurality of subchannels of a communications channel; and a transmitter portion of the transceiver operable to transmit a message after determining that the predetermined error threshold has been exceeded, the message comprising an array comprising a plurality of elements, wherein each element comprises information associated with the frequency domain received idle channel noise of at least one subchannel. 2. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modem. 3. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is customer premises modem. 4. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is located in a central office. 5. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is located in a customer premises. 6. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is an ATU-R (ADSL transceiver unit, remote). 7. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 6 , wherein the transmitter portion is further operable to retransmit the message a plurality of times. 8. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is ATU-C (ADSL transceiver unit, central office). 9. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , wherein predetermined error threshold is exceeded when the number of CRC errors is greater than a value over a period of time. 10. A method, in a multicarrier transceiver, the method comprising: completing, by a transmitter portion of the transceiver and a receiver portion of the transceiver, an initialization procedure and entering into a steady state communication mode in which user data is transmitted and received; determining, by a receiver portion of the transceiver, whether a predetermined error threshold has been exceeded during steady state communication mode, wherein the predetermined error threshold is based on cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors during the steady state communication mode; measuring, by a receiver portion of the transceiver, a frequency domain received idle channel noise on each of a plurality of subchannels of a communications channel; and transmitting, by a transmitter portion of the receiver, a message after determining that the predetermined error threshold has been exceeded, the message comprising an array comprising a plurality of elements, wherein each element comprises information associated with the frequency domain received idle channel noise of at least one subchannel. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver is Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modem. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver is customer premises modem. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver is located in a central office. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver is located in a customer premises. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver is an ATU-R (ADSL transceiver unit, remote). 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver is ATU-C (ADSL transceiver unit, central office). 17. The method of claim 10 , wherein predetermined error threshold is exceeded when the number of CRC errors is greater than a value over a period of time.
