Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An HVAC controller configured to control a VAV box including a damper may include a temperature sensor that is configured to sense a temperature proximate the HVAC controller and a touch screen user interface that is configured to display the sensed temperature and to enable a user to input a temperature set point. A controller may be operatively coupled to the touch screen user interface and the temperature sensor and may be configured to regulate operation of the VAV box in accordance with the sensed temperature and the temperature set point. The HVAC controller may be programmed with a test and balance procedure that is user-accessible via the touch screen user interface.

We claim: 1. An HVAC controller configured to control a VAV box that includes a damper that has two or more damper positions and is configured to provide variable amounts of conditioned air to one or more downstream air vents, the HVAC controller comprising: a temperature sensor configured to sense a temperature proximate the HVAC controller; a touch screen user interface configured to display the sensed temperature and to enable a user to input a temperature set point; a controller operatively coupled to the touch screen user interface and the temperature sensor, the controller is configured to regulate operation of the VAV box in accordance with the sensed temperature and the temperature set point; and wherein the HVAC controller is programmed with a test and balance procedure that is user-accessible via the touch screen user interface, wherein the test and balance procedure includes driving the damper of the VAV box to each of two or more damper positions and comparing a measured air flow indicator through the VAV box at each of the two or more damper positions to a corresponding desired air flow indicator, and wherein the HVAC controller is configured to display on the touch screen user interface a damper time value and up and down graphical icons for adjusting the damper time value. 2. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to display one or more of a sensed temperature, a sensed humidity and a sensed carbon dioxide value on the touch screen user interface, each value being displayed, if displayed, in a repeatable location on the touch screen user interface. 3. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to display graphical icons indicating a mode in which the HVAC controller is being operated, the mode including one or more of a normal operation mode, a temperature set point adjustment mode and a commissioning mode in which the HVAC controller can operate the test and balance procedure. 4. The HVAC controller of claim 3 , wherein the graphical icons include one or more of a clock icon, a thermometer icon, a fan blade icon, a relative humidity icon, a heating icon or a cooling icon. 5. The HVAC controller of claim 4 , wherein each of the graphical icons are displayed, when displayed, in a repeatable location on the touch screen user interface. 6. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to display, when in the test and balance procedure, an air flow volume value and up and down graphical icons for adjusting the air flow volume value by adjusting the damper position of the VAV box. 7. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to operate the test and balance procedure for a single deck providing conditioned air to the VAV box, and for a dual deck system including a cold deck providing conditioned cool air to the VAV box and a hot deck providing conditioned warm air to the VAV box. 8. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC controller is programmed to include, in the test and balance procedure, a procedure for: sequentially driving the damper to each of the two or more damper positions; displaying the damper position on the touch screen user interface at each of the two or more damper positions; obtaining an indication of air flow through the VAV box at each of the two or more damper positions; displaying the indication of air flow through the VAV box at each of the two or more damper positions. 9. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , further comprising a humidity sensor. 10. The HVAC controller of claim 1 , further comprising a carbon dioxide sensor. 11. An HVAC system comprising: a VAV box including a damper movable between several damper positions, the VAV box configured to provide variable amounts of conditioned air to one or more downstream air vents; an HVAC controller mounted remotely from the VAV box and including a touch screen user interface configured to accept a temperature set point, wherein the HVAC controller is configured to control the VAV box in accordance with the temperature set point; and wherein the HVAC controller is further configured to display a user-initiated test and balance procedure on the touch screen user interface, wherein the user-initiated test and balance procedure includes driving the damper of the VAV box to each of two or more damper positions and comparing a measured air flow indicator through the VAV box at each of the two or more damper positions to a corresponding desired air flow indicator, and based on the comparison, calibrate the two or more damper positions, and wherein the HVAC controller is configured to display on the touch screen user interface a damper time value and up and down graphical icons for adjusting the damper time value. 12. The HVAC system of claim 11 , wherein the HVAC controller is configured to display one or more of a sensed temperature, a sensed humidity or a sensed carbon dioxide value on the touch screen user interface, each value being displayed, if displayed, in a repeatable location on the touch screen user interface. 13.
