Official abstract text for this publication.
Systems, methods and IC card devices are described for updating parameters such as unblocking or blocking or re-blocking an application on an IC card device whereby an integrated circuit card device gets issued with one or more active applications and optionally one or more dormant applications. Post issuance, triggered by a cardholder action when using a primary application, the issuer will send a command, e.g. in the form of a script to the card that will update parameters of another application, e.g. to ‘wake up’ the or each dormant application. An on-card mechanism is provided for the deblocking of the dormant application while the primary application is active. For any further transactions performed with the card, the cardholder will be offered a choice between the unblocked applications on the card. Optionally the oncard mechanism can also block or re-block an application or perform other actions.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving an authorization request at an issuer; sending an authorization response from the issuer, the authorization response including a script, the script for being performed by a primary application on a payment device to cause an update to a parameter associated with a secondary application on the payment device, said update applied to a memory location that is accessible by the secondary application when the secondary application is active, said memory location not accessible by the primary application when the secondary application is active. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the secondary application is a dormant application and the script is for unblocking the dormant application. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the script is for blocking or unblocking the secondary application. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment device is an integrated circuit (IC) card. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the applications is at least one of a credit application, a debit application, a loyalty application and a prepaid application. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the script includes data which identifies the secondary application as a target application for the update. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the script includes a data field which contains an updated value for the parameter. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: prior to said receiving step, receiving an indication from a user of the payment device to indicate that the user desires to update the parameter. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the indication from the user is received via telephone, Short Message Service, email, web-based application or by communication in person. 10. A method comprising: storing a first application in a payment device; reserving a first memory area for use by the first application, access to the first memory area controlled by a first key, the first memory area in a nonvolatile memory included in the payment device; storing a second application in the payment device; reserving a second memory area for use by the second application, access to the second memory area controlled by a second key, the second memory area in a nonvolatile memory included in the payment device; sharing the second key with the first application; using the first key by the first application to update a parameter of the second application in the second memory area by performing a script received by the payment device. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the updated parameter unblocks the second application. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the updated parameter blocks the second application. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the script was generated by an issuer of a payment account. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the applications is a payment application. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the payment device is an integrated circuit (IC) card. 16. A method comprising: receiving a script in a payment device; reading the received script by a first application that is active in the payment device to identify a second application that is stored in the payment device; and storing, by the first application, parameter data from the script in a memory area reserved for the second application, said memory area accessible by the second application when the second application is active, said memory area not accessible by the first application when the second application is active. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the second application is dormant when the script is received in the payment device. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the storing of the parameter data in the memory area reserved for the second application causes the second application to be unblocked. 19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the storing of the parameter data in the memory area reserved for the second application causes the second application to be blocked. 20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the payment device is an integrated circuit (IC) card.
