An in-joint pump and control device comprising a pump and an in-joint sensor. The pump is configured to convey fluid to a body joint surgical site. The pump has an algorithm associated therewith to make calculations and to assist in controlling the operation of the pump. The in-joint sensor is operatively associated with the pump by at least a communication member. The in-joint sensor comprises a sheath, an integration member attached to the sheath, a pressure sensor connected to the integration member, and a temperature sensor adjacent the sheath. The pressure sensor is adapted to provide pressure information to the pump via the communication member. The temperature sensor is also adapted to provide temperature information to the pump via the communication member.

First claim

We claim: 1. A sensing device comprising: a sheath having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end, a distal end, and a wall having an outer surface and an inner surface and defining an inner lumen extending substantially in the direction of the longitudinal axis; an integration component attached to the sheath and having an inner space and an attachment portion configured to interface with the sheath to maintain fluid seal, the sheath having a space therein to allow a static column of liquid to reside adjacent the integration component; a thermal sensing device adjacent the inner surface of the wall of the sheath and terminating distally adjacent the distal end of the sheath, the thermal sensing device adapted to measure and relay the temperature of fluid in or adjacent a surgical site; and a pressure sensing device located adjacent the integration component and having a sensing portion adjacent or in the inner space of the integration component, the static column of liquid extending from the distal end of the sheath to the sensing portion of the pressure sensing device, the pressure sensing device configured to measure and relay information based on the pressure of the static column of liquid to be used to calculate the pressure at the surgical site. 2. The sensing device of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor aperture located in or adjacent the integration component, the sensor aperture retaining the pressure sensor. 3. The sensing device of claim 2 , wherein the thermal sensing device comprises a wire thermistor. 4. The sensing device of claim 3 , and further comprising a shaft for receiving a portion of the thermal sensing device, at least a portion of the shaft being integrated with the wall of the sheath. 5. The sensing device of claim 1 , wherein the thermal sensing device comprises a thermal sensor attached to at least one fiber optic member. 6. The sensing device of claim 1 , wherein the pressure sensing device comprises a peizoresistive pressure sensor. 7. The sensing device of claim 1 , wherein the pressure sensing device comprises a pressure sensor utilizing fiber optics. 8. The sensing device of claim 1 , wherein the pressure sensing device comprises an air-water pressure separator sensor. 9. The sensing device of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensing device creates a temperature signal and relays the temperature signal for use in a pump control algorithm. 10. The sensing device of claim 9 , wherein the pressure sensing device creates a pressure signal and relays the pressure signal for use in a pump control algorithm. 11. An arthroscopic tubeset comprising: a cannula having a wall defining a first interior space and a wall surface, the cannula having a distal end; a sheath attached to the wall surface of the cannula, the sheath defining a second interior space and having a sheath end adjacent the cannula distal end, the sheath further including a dividing wall in the second interior space; a pressure sensor disposed at least partially in the second interior space of the sheath and adjacent the sheath end; a temperature sensor disposed at least partially in the second interior space of the sheath and adjacent the sheath end; and at least one communication member attached to each of the pressure sensor and temperature sensor for relaying information to a controller, each communication member partially housed within the sheath, the dividing wall of the sheath disposed between the pressure sensor and the temperature sensor. 12. The arthroscopic tubeset according to claim 11 , wherein the cannula is attached to in-flow tubing from a pump. 13. The arthroscopic tubeset according to claim 11 , wherein the pressure sensor and the temperature sensor are disposed side-by-side with respect to each other in the second interior space of the sheath. 14. The arthroscopic tubeset according to claim 11 , wherein the pressure sensor has a diameter between about 120 microns and about 140 microns.
