Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A computer-implemented method can include displaying, within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane, and a project pane, displaying, within the media pane, a thumbnail group representing a media item, the thumbnail group comprising one or more thumbnails, a thumbnail comprising a plurality of frames, enabling a user to select, from the thumbnail group, a frame of the media item, and upon detecting that the user has selected a frame, creating a group of frames, the group of frames including the selected frame and one or more adjacent frames.

What is claimed is: 1. A computer-implemented method comprising: generating, for display within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane and a project pane; causing the user interface to be presented on a display of the digital media system; generating, for display within the media pane, a thumbnail to represent a plurality of frames from a digital media item by dynamically displaying a frame from the plurality of frames based on a user selected location within the thumbnail, the thumbnail including a plurality of locations, wherein each location in the plurality of locations within the thumbnail corresponds to a frame of the plurality of frames; detecting a first selection by a user of a particular location within the thumbnail, wherein the particular location corresponds to a particular frame of the digital media item; and in response to detecting the first selection of the particular location: displaying the particular frame on the thumbnail; automatically designating a subset of the plurality of frames, the subset including the particular frame and a quantity of adjacent frames that correspond to a predetermined media play duration; and automatically transferring the automatically designated group of frames to the project pane. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjacent frames include one or more frames before or one or more frames after the particular frame in the digital media item. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined media play duration is four seconds. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the first selection of the particular location includes detecting a single selection of the particular location. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transferring the designated group of frames in response to receiving a selection of any location included in the thumbnail. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein receiving the selection of any location included in the thumbnail comprises detecting a selection of a position indicator positioned over any location included in the thumbnail. 7. A non-transitory computer-readable storage device storing instructions executable by a computer system to perform operations comprising: generating, for display, a user interface in a digital media system, wherein the user interface includes a first portion; causing the user interface to be presented on a display of the digital media system; generating, for display within the first portion, a thumbnail to represent a plurality of frames from a digital media item by dynamically displaying a frame from the plurality of frames based on a user selected location within the thumbnail, the thumbnail including a plurality of locations, wherein each location in the plurality of locations within the thumbnail corresponds to a frame of the plurality of frames; detecting a first selection by a user of a particular location within the thumbnail, wherein the particular location corresponds to a particular frame included in the digital video item; and in response to detecting the first selection of the particular location: displaying the particular frame on the thumbnail; and automatically designating a subset of the plurality of frames, the automatically designated subset including the particular frame and a quantity of adjacent frames that collectively correspond to a predetermined video play duration; and automatically transferring the automatically designated subset of the plurality of frames to a second portion of the user interface adjacent the first portion. 8. The storage device of claim 7 , wherein the first selection of the particular location includes a single selection of the particular location. 9. The storage device of claim 7 , further comprising instructions to perform an operation including transferring the designated group of frames to the second portion in response to detecting a selection of a location that corresponds to any frame included in the automatically designated subset. 10. The storage device of claim 7 , further comprising instructions to perform an operation including placing a pair of identifiers at a first frame and a last frame of the designated group of frames. 11. The storage device of claim 10 , further comprising instructions to perform an operations including: detecting an input to change a position of an identifier displayed at the first frame to a different position on the thumbnail that corresponds to a different frame of the plurality of frames; in response to detecting the input to change the position: displaying the identifier at the different position, and changing frames included in the automatically designated subset based on the different frame to which the different position corresponds. 12. The storage device of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined video play duration is four seconds. 13. A digital media system cormprising: a processor; and a computer-readable storage device storing instructions executable by the processor to perform operations comprising: generating, for display within a user interface in the digital media system, a media pane and a project pane; causing the user interface to be presented on a display of the digital media system; generating, for display within the media pane, a thumbnail to represent a plurality of frames from a digital media item by dynamically displaying a frame from the plurality of frames based on a user selected location within the thumbnail, the thumbnail including a plurality of locations, wherein each location in the plurality of locations within the thumbnail corresponds to a frame of the plurality of frames; detecting a first selection by a user of a particular location within the thumbnail, wherein the particular location corresponds to a particular frame of the digital media item; and in response to detecting the first selection of the particular location: displaying the particular frame on the thumbnail; automatically designating a subset of the plurality of frames, the subset including the particular frame and a quantity of adjacent frames that correspond to a predetermined media play duration; and automatically transferring the automatically designated group of frames to the project pane. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the adjacent frames include one or more frames before or one or more frames after the particular frame in the digital media item. 15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the adjacent frames include frames before and frames after the particular frame in the digital media item. 16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first selection is a single selection of the particular location. 17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the predetermined media play duration is variable in response to input. 18. The system of claim 13 , further comprising transferring the designated group of frames in response to receiving a selection of any location included in the thumbnail. 19. The system of claim 18 , wherein receiving the selection of the thumbnail comprises detecting a selection of a position indicator positioned over any location included in the thumbnail.
