Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and apparatus relating to the collection of data regarding a plurality of customers in a retail or entertainment environment. Data may be collected via at least one sensor coupled to at least one lighting fixture in the retail or entertainment environment. In one exemplary implementation, data may be collected by one or more lighting fixtures, and data may be communicated via light generated by any one or more fixtures without perceivably affecting a quality of light generated by the one or more fixtures. A map may be generated based on the collected data to display traffic patterns and/or dwell times of the plurality of customers in the retail or entertainment environment, and such a map may be displayed, for example, via a graphical user interface.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: in a plurality of visible light-emitting lighting devices installed within a physical environment visited by customers, each of the lighting devices comprising a substrate carrying at least one LED-based lighting fixture coupled to a processor and at least one sensor configured to detect and track customer movements, collecting, by the at least one sensor, data indicative of trajectories in a plurality of directions of a plurality of customers within the physical environment, said data obtained from a control signal carried by visible light; transmitting, by the processor, to a computing system linked to the lighting devices over one or more networks, the collected data comprising; analyzing, by the computing system, the collected data; identifying, by the computing system based on the analyzing, traffic patterns of at least some of the plurality of customers within the physical environment, wherein the traffic patterns comprise a plurality of directions within the physical environment, wherein the traffic patterns comprise preferred navigation patterns of customers within the physical environment based on movement detection and movement tracking by the at least one sensor of at least some of the plurality of customers through the physical environment; rendering, by the computing system on one or more displays, a graphical user interface that displays at least one plan view of the physical environment, wherein the at least one plan view comprises a graphical representation of the physical environment; rendering, by the computing system as part of the graphical user interface, information on the traffic patterns within the physical environment on the at least one plan view; and causing, by the computing system, at least the lighting device to be operated to emit visible light in order to present information based at least in part on the received data, the visible light being generated on at least one of at least one ceiling, at least one wall and/or at least one floor of the physical environment. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical environment comprises a retail department store. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical environment is selected from the group consisting of: a park, a theme park, a trade show, a sports arena, a resort, a hotel, a casino and an entertainment company. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: identifying at least one customer of the plurality of customers that has passed by at least one item of merchandise in the physical environment. 5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining a speed at which the at least one customer passes by the at least one item of merchandise. 6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining a number of the plurality of customers that have passed by at least one item of merchandise in the physical environment. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises at least one line representing at least one traffic path in the physical environment, and wherein at least one characteristic of the at least one line depends at least in part on at least one characteristic of the at least one traffic path. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the at least one line comprises a width of the at least one line, and wherein the at least one characteristic of the at least one traffic path comprises a number of the plurality of customers that have used the at least one traffic path. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises at least one clock representing at least one dwell time of the dwell times. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: presenting by the computing system on one or more displays, at least one traffic pattern; wherein the at least one traffic pattern comprises at least one line representing at least one traffic path in the physical environment, and wherein at least one characteristic of the at least one line depends at least in part on at least one characteristic of the at least one traffic path. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the at least one line comprises a width of the at least one line, and wherein the at least one characteristic of the at least one traffic path comprises a number of the plurality of customers that have used the at least one traffic path. 12. The method of claim 1 further comprising: analyzing, by the computing system, the collected data to determine at least one point of traffic congestion for the at least some of the plurality of customers. 13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising: causing, by the computing system, at least the lighting device to emit visible light selected to redirect a traffic flow of the at least some of the plurality of customers based at least in part on the determination of the at least one point of traffic congestion. 14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: collecting, by the computing system, data regarding selection of at least one item of merchandise; and providing, by the computing system as part of the graphical user interface, information on at least one location of the at least one item of merchandise in the physical environment. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: causing, by the computing system, at least the lighting device to emit visible light indicative of a direction to the at least one location on at least one of at least one ceiling, at least one wall or at least one floor of the physical environment. 16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: analyzing the collected data to assess at least one buying behavior of at least some of the plurality of customers with respect to at least one item of merchandise in the physical environment. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising determining at least one effect of at least one lighting characteristic of light generated by the at least one LED-based lighting fixture based on the at least one buying behavior of the plurality of customers. 18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising: dynamically adjusting a price of the at least one item of merchandise based at least in part of the assessment of at least one buying behavior. 19. An apparatus comprising logic operably coupled with a display, the logic being configured to: receive from a plurality of lighting devices linked to the apparatus and installed within a physical environment visited by customers, each of the plurality of lighting devices comprising a substrate carrying at least one LED-based lighting fixture coupled to a processor and at least one sensor configured to detect and track customer movements, data reconstructed from a control signal carried by visible light, said data indicative of trajectories at a plurality of locations of a plurality of customers within the physical environment; analyze the received data; identify, based on the analysis of the received data, dwell times at a plurality of locations of at least some of the plurality of customers in the physical environment, wherein the dwell times include at least one duration of time spent by at least one customer of the plurality of customers viewing at least one item of merchandise in the physical environment; render, on the display, a graphical user interface that presents at least one dwell time, wherein the at least one dwell time is graphically presented as at least one clock representing at least one dwell time of the dwell times; and causing at least the lighting device to be
