Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A process of determining features of a fabric. A representation of a portion of a surface of the fabric is formed showing at least one of (i) locations and (ii) sizes of knuckles and pockets in the surface of the fabric. An image is generated of the portion of the surface of the fabric based on the representation. A portion of the image is displayed on a computer screen. An outline is drawn around at least one of the knuckles in the image. Guidelines are drawn such that the guidelines (i) pass through the center of the at least one outlined knuckle, (ii) pass through the other knuckles, or (iii) form shapes that surround areas of the image that correspond to where the pockets are formed between the knuckles. The outline and the guidelines are drawn using an image analysis program.

I claim: 1. A process of determining features of a fabric, the process comprising: forming a representation of a portion of a surface of the fabric, the representation showing at least one of (i) locations and (ii) sizes of knuckles and pockets in the surface of the fabric; generating an image of the portion of the surface of the fabric based on the representation; displaying at least a portion of the image on a screen associated with a computer having a processor; drawing an outline around at least one of the knuckles in the displayed image; drawing guidelines in the displayed image such that the guidelines at least one of (i) pass through the center of the at least one outlined knuckle, (ii) pass through the other knuckles, and (iii) form shapes that surround areas of the image that correspond to where the pockets are formed between the knuckles, wherein the outline and the guidelines are drawn using an image analysis program stored in a non-transitory computer-readable medium; a step of determining at least one of (i) a length of the outlined knuckle, (ii) a width of the outlined knuckle, (iii) orientation angles of the guidelines, and (iv) locations of the knuckles along the guidelines, wherein the determining step is performed by the image analysis program; and a calculating step of calculating at least one of (i) a percentage of the surface of the fabric that corresponds to the knuckles and (ii) a density of the pockets, based on a determination made in the determining step. 2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the shapes include at least non-rectangular parellelograms. 3. The process according to claim 2 , wherein the calculating step uses at least one of (i) the determinations of the length of the outlined knuckle, (ii) the width of the outlined knuckle, (iii) the orientation angle of the guidelines, (iv) the locations of the knuckles along the guidelines, and (v) a calculated area of at least one of the parallelograms. 4. The process according to claim 3 , wherein the calculating step uses the calculated area of at least one of the parallelograms, and the area is calculated using an angle of one corner of the parallelogram and a distance between two parallel guidelines of guidelines that form the parallelogram. 5. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the representation is formed by at least one of (i) pressing the fabric against a pressure measurement film, (ii) taking a photograph of the fabric, and (iii) pressing the fabric against wax paper. 6. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the fabric is a papermaking fabric. 7. A process of determining features of a fabric, the process comprising: forming a representation of a portion of a surface of the fabric, the representation showing at least one of (i) locations and (ii) the sizes of at least one of knuckles and pockets in the surface of the fabric, and the representation being one of (i) a print of the surface of the fabric and (ii) a photograph of the surface of the fabric; generating an image of the portion of the surface of the fabric based on the representation; displaying at least a portion of the image on a screen associated with a computer having a processor; determining at least one of (i) the sizes and (ii) the locations of the knuckles in the displayed image; determining at least one of (i) the sizes and (ii) the locations of the pockets in the displayed image; drawing a unit cell for the portion of the surface of the fabric in the displayed image, wherein the unit cell has properties and is defined by guidelines that are drawn at least (i) to pass through the centers of the knuckles and (ii) to form shapes that surround areas of the image that correspond to where the pockets are formed between the knuckles; and a calculating step of calculating at least one property of the surface of the fabric based on properties of the unit cell formed by the guidelines, wherein at least one of the unit cell and the guidelines are drawn using an image analysis program stored in a non-transitory computer-readable medium. 8. The process according to claim 7 , wherein the shapes are non-rectangular parallelograms. 9. The process according to claim 8 , wherein the calculating step includes calculating at least one of a percentage of the surface of the fabric that corresponds to the knuckles and a density of the pockets. 10. The process according to claim 9 , wherein the calculating step uses the sizes of the knuckles along the guidelines and calculates an area of the parallelograms. 11. The process according to claim 10 , wherein the area of the parallelograms is calculated using an angle of one corner of the parallelograms and a distance between two parallel guidelines of guidelines that form the parallelograms. 12. A process according to claim 7 , wherein the fabric is a papermaking fabric.
