Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A trailering assist system for a vehicle includes a rearward facing camera disposed at a rearward portion of a vehicle equipped with the trailering assist system. The rearward facing camera is operable to capture image data representative of the scene rearward of the equipped vehicle. When a trailer is near and/or attached to the equipped vehicle and is rearward of the equipped vehicle, a processor is operable to process the captured image data and, responsive at least in part to such processing, is operable to determine a trailer angle of the trailer relative to a longitudinal axis of the equipped vehicle.

The invention claimed is: 1. A trailering assist system for a vehicle, said trailering assist system comprising: at least a rearward facing camera disposed at a rearward portion of a vehicle equipped with said trailering assist system; wherein said rearward facing camera is operable to capture image data representative of the scene rearward of the equipped vehicle; wherein, when a trailer is attached to the equipped vehicle and is rearward of the equipped vehicle, a processor is operable to process the captured image data and, responsive at least in part to processing of captured image data, is operable to determine a trailer angle of the trailer relative to a longitudinal axis of the equipped vehicle; wherein said processor, responsive to processing of captured image data, determines a location of a target at or of the trailer relative to the equipped vehicle and determines the trailer angle of the trailer responsive to the determined location; wherein the target comprises at least one of (a) an icon or shape or indicia disposed at a forward portion of the trailer, (b) an icon or shape or indicia established on a sheet attached at a forward portion of the trailer, (c) an icon or shape or indicia established at a forward portion of the trailer, (d) a target pattern established at a surface of the trailer or trailer tongue, (e) a colored pattern established at a surface of the trailer or trailer tongue and (f) a forward portion of the trailer; wherein said processor, responsive to processing of captured image data, determines a degree of swing or sway of the trailer during forward travel of the equipped vehicle and trailer; and wherein, during a reversing maneuver of the equipped vehicle and trailer, said processor is operable to process the captured image data to determine a rearward trajectory of the trailer. 2. The trailering assist system of claim 1 , wherein said processor determines the location of the target based at least in part by at least one of (a) a regressive 2-D histogram that detects a pattern at the trailer, (b) an image pattern matching algorithm, (c) a color matching algorithm, and (d) an edge detection algorithm. 3. The trailering assist system of claim 1 , wherein, responsive to said processor determining a degree of swing or sway of the trailer that is greater than a threshold level, said trailering assist system generates an alert signal to alert the driver of a potentially hazardous situation while the equipped vehicle is pulling the trailer in a forward direction. 4. The trailering assist system of claim 3 , wherein the threshold level of swing or sway of the trailer relative to the equipped vehicle is dynamically adjustable, and wherein the threshold level is adjusted responsive to at least one of (i) a speed of the equipped vehicle and trailer and (ii) a load of the trailer. 5. The trailering assist system of claim 1 , comprising a display screen for displaying video images, wherein said trailering assist system generates a display indicative of the determined rearward trajectory to assist the driver in reversing the equipped vehicle and trailer. 6. The trailering assist system of claim 5 , wherein said trailering assist system generates an alert signal to alert the driver of a potentially hazardous situation during the reversing maneuver. 7. The trailering assist system of claim 5 , wherein said processor determines the rearward trajectory of the trailer responsive to the determined location of the target. 8. The trailering assist system of claim 5 , wherein said trailering assist system determines the rearward trajectory of the trailer responsive at least in part to an input indicative of trailer dimensional characteristics. 9. The trailering assist system of claim 5 , wherein said trailering assist system generates a graphic overlay on the displayed video images to indicate to the driver viewing said display the determined rearward trajectory. 10. The trailering assist system of claim 1 , wherein said processor determines the trailer angle of the trailer responsive to the determined location of the target, and wherein the target comprises at least one target pattern established at a surface of the trailer or trailer tongue, and wherein said processor at least one of (i) matches a pattern template to said at least one target pattern to determine the presence and location of said at least one target pattern and (ii) matches at least one color of said pattern template to at least one color of said at least one target pattern to determine the presence and location of said at least one target pattern. 11. The trailering assist system of claim 1 , wherein, responsive to said processor determining a degree of swing or sway of the trailer that is greater than a threshold level, said trailering assist system controls at least one of (i) a braking system of the equipped vehicle, (ii) a braking system of the trailer, (iii) a steering system of the equipped vehicle and (iv) a steering system of the trailer. 12. The trailering assist system of claim 1 , wherein said trailering assist system is operable to control the trailer angle of the trailer relative to the equipped vehicle to adjust for the trailer swing or sway by controlling at least one of (i) individual braking of the wheels of the equipped vehicle wheels, (ii) individual braking of the wheels of the trailer and (iii) a steering system of the equipped vehicle. 13. A trailering assist system for a vehicle, said trailering assist system comprising: at least a rearward facing camera disposed at a rearward portion of a vehicle equipped with said trailering assist system; wherein said rearward facing camera is operable to capture image data representative of the scene rearward of the equipped vehicle; wherein, when a trailer is attached to the equipped vehicle and is rearward of the equipped vehicle, a processor is operable to process the captured image data and, responsive at least in part to processing of captured image data, is operable to determine a trailer angle of the trailer relative to a longitudinal axis of the equipped vehicle; wherein said processor, responsive to processing of captured image data, determines a location of a target at or of the trailer relative to the equipped vehicle and determines the trailer angle of the trailer responsive to the determined location; wherein said processor, responsive to processing of captured image data, determines a degree of swing or sway of the trailer during forward travel of the equipped vehicle and trailer; wherein, responsive to said processor determining a degree of swing or sway of the trailer that is greater than a threshold level, said trailering assist system generates an alert signal to alert the driver of a potentially hazardous situation while the equipped vehicle is pulling the trailer in a forward direction; wherein the threshold level of swing or sway of the trailer relative to the equipped vehicle is dynamically adjustable, and wherein the threshold level is adjusted responsive to at least one of (i) a speed of the equipped vehicle and trailer and (ii) a load of the trailer; wherein, during a reversing maneuver of the equipped vehicle and trailer, said processor is operable to process the captured image data to determine a rearward trajectory of the trailer; a display screen for displaying video images, wherein said trailering assist system generates a display indicative of the determined rearward trajectory to assist the driver in reversing the equipped vehicle and trailer; and wherein said trailering assist system generates an alert signal to alert the driver of a potentially hazardous situation during the reversing
