The present invention consists of an implantable device with at least one package that houses electronics that sends and receives data or signals, and optionally power, from an external system through at least one coil attached to at least one package and processes the data, including recordings of neural activity, and delivers electrical pulses to neural tissue through at least one array of multiple electrodes that are attached to the at least one package. The device is adapted to electrocorticographic (ECoG) and local field potential (LFP) signals. A brain stimulator, preferably a deep brain stimulator, stimulates the brain in response to neural recordings in a closed feedback loop. The device is advantageous in providing neuromodulation therapies for neurological disorders such as chronic pain, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, or similar disorders. The invention and components thereof are intended to be installed in the head, or on or in the cranium or on the dura, or on or in the brain.

What we claim is: 1. A neurostimulation and recording device comprising: a first hermetic package enclosing a first electronic circuit for neural recording from the brain suitable to be implanted within a head; a first flexible circuit including a polymer base layer, a metal layer forming bond pads, electrodes and traces connecting bond pads to electrodes on the polymer base layer, and a polymer top layer on the polymer base layer and the metal layer, the bond pads bonded to the first hermetic package and electrically coupling the electrodes to the first electronic circuit, the electrodes suitable to record neural activity from the brain; a first wireless transceiver electrically coupled to the electronic circuit for neural recording for sending data derived from the neural activity; a first coil connected to the first wireless transceiver, suitable to send data to a control circuit; a second hermetic package, separate from the first hermetic package, enclosing a second electronic circuit for neural stimulation suitable to be implanted within the same head; a second flexible circuit including a polymer base layer, a metal layer forming bond pads, electrodes and traces connecting bond pads to electrodes on the polymer base layer, and a polymer top layer on the polymer base layer and the metal layer, the bond pads bonded to the second hermetic package and electrically coupling the electrodes to the second electrical circuit, the electrodes suitable to stimulate neurons in the brain; a second wireless transceiver electrically coupled to the second electronic circuit for neural stimulation for receiving stimulation data; a second coil connected to the second wireless transceiver, suitable to receive data from the control circuit; and the control circuit suitable to be external to a human body receiving the data derived from neural activity from the first wireless transceiver, calculating stimulation patterns and sending stimulation data to the second wireless transceiver. 2. The neural stimulation and recording device according to claim 1 , where the electronic circuit for neural recording is adapted to record electrocorticographic signals. 3. The neural stimulation and recording device according to claim 1 , wherein the electronic circuit for neural recording is adapted to record local field potential signals. 4. The neural stimulation and recording device according to claim 1 , wherein the second flexible circuit is adapted to stimulate deep brain neurons. 5. The neural stimulation and recording device according to claim 4 , wherein the second flexible circuit is adapted to stimulate the basolateral nucleus of amygdalae. 6. The neural stimulation and recording device according to claim 1 , wherein the first flexible circuit is adapted to record neural signals from the surface of the brain. 7. The neural stimulation and recording device according to claim 1 , wherein the second flexible circuit is adapted to record signals from an medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). 8. The neurostimulation and recording device according to claim 1 , wherein the second circuit for neural stimulation provides stimulation patterns in response to neural recordings from the first circuit, the first circuit and the second circuit forming a closed feedback loop.
