Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cassette ( 2600 ) for use with a medical waste collection system ( 30 ). The cassette includes a housing ( 2602, 2612 ) shaped to be removably attached to a receptacle ( 1699 ) integral with the housing. A sleeve ( 2640 ) is attached to the cassette so as to be located forward of the housing. The sleeve is formed with a void space. A fitting ( 2664 ) for collection to a suction line is attached to the sleeve. A screen ( 2714 ) is removably fitted in the sleeve void space. The screen is fitted in the sleeve void space when it is desirable to catch tissue that may be entrained in the fluid stream from the suction line.

What is claimed is: 1. A specimen collection cassette for use with a medical fluid collection system, said cassette including: a housing configured for removable attachment to the fluid collection system wherein, said housing is shaped to have: a sleeve, the sleeve having first and second opposed and spaced apart interior surfaces that at least partially define a first void space of said housing; an aperture in the second interior surface; and an outlet opening located proximal to the aperture through which fluid is able to flow from the first void space and through the aperture into the medical waste collection system; a first fitting attached to said housing to which a first suction line that extends from a medical/surgical site can be attached, said first fitting opening into a bore formed in the first interior surface of said sleeve; a supplemental opening formed in said housing that is separate from the bore in the first interior surface of said sleeve, the aperture in the second interior surface of said sleeve and the outlet opening of said housing, the supplemental opening into the first void space of said housing; and a cap that is removably attached to said housing so as to seat over the supplemental opening, said cap having an inner surface that is directed toward said housing first void space; and a catch tray that is removably attached to the inner surface of said cap and shaped to occupy said housing first void space, said catch tray having a porous screen and at least one wall that extends upwardly from an outer perimeter of said screen so that said screen and said at least one wall collectively define an open ended cavity so that, when said catch tray is attached to said cap and said cap is disposed over the supplemental opening, the cavity is open to the bore in the first interior surface of said sleeve into which said first fitting opens and said screen is disposed against the second interior surface of said sleeve so that fluid flows from the first fitting through said housing first void space, across the porous screen and through the aperture in the second interior surface of said sleeve to the outlet opening. 2. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 wherein: the second interior surface of said sleeve is a surface of a wall in said housing that separates the housing first void space from a second void space of said housing wherein said housing outlet opening opens from the second void space and the aperture in the second interior surface of said sleeve is an aperture formed in said wall which fluid can flow from the first void space into the second void space; and a second fitting for receiving a second suction line separate from the first suction line that extends from said housing and said second fitting opens directly into the second void space of said housing. 3. The specimen collection cassette of claim 2 , wherein: a first backflow prevention valve is mounted to said housing to prevent backflow from the second void space of said housing into the first void space of said housing; and a second backflow prevention valve is mounted to said housing to prevent backflow from the second void space of said housing into said housing second fitting. 4. The specimen collection cassette of claim 3 , wherein said first and second backflow prevention valves are formed as a single unit. 5. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 , wherein: at least one beam extends from said cap so as to extend into the first void space of said housing; and a lip extends outwardly from said at least one wall of said catch tray and is positioned to extend over said at least one beam so as to releasably suspend said catch tray from said beam. 6. The specimen collection cassette of claim 5 , wherein: said at least one beam is arranged to form a slot; and said screen and said lip of said catch tray are collectively shaped so that said screen seats in the slot and said lip extends over the at least one slot-forming beam. 7. The specimen collection cassette of claim 6 , wherein said at least one beam of said catch tray is shaped so the slot is fully enclosed by said beam. 8. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 , wherein: said housing has a base that forms a proximal end of said housing wherein the base has a center; and said outlet opening of said housing is formed in the base of said housing and the outlet opening has a center that is spaced from the center of said housing base. 9. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 , wherein: said housing has a shell that forms a proximal portion of said housing, the shell having a cylindrical outer wall; and the outlet opening of said housing is formed in said shell. 10. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 , wherein said housing is formed so that the first void space of said housing is a closed end bore. 11. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 , wherein a seal is located between said housing and said cap to prevent the loss of suction between said housing and said cap. 12. The specimen collection cassette of claim 11 , wherein said seal is attached to said cap. 13. The specimen collection cassette of claim 1 , wherein said housing includes: a main body in which the outlet opening is formed, the main body having a surface with an inlet port that is separate from the outlet opening; and a box that is removably attached to the main body so as to seat over the surface in which the inlet port is formed, the box defining said sleeve of said housing so as to define the first void space, the aperture and the supplemental opening, and wherein said first fitting extends from said box so as to open into the first void space and said box is further formed so that when said box is attached to said main body of said housing, a fluid communication path is established between the aperture in the second interior surface of said sleeve and the inlet port of said main body. 14. A specimen collection cassette for use with a medical fluid collection system, said cassette including: a housing configured for removable attachment to the fluid collection system, said housing having: an interior wall that separates an interior of the housing into a first void space and a second void space, the interior wall having an aperture through which fluid can flow from the first void space into the second void space; an outlet opening that extends from the second void space through which fluid is able to flow from the first void space, the aperture in the interior wall and the second void space and into a fluid collection system; and a supplemental opening in said housing that is separate from the outlet opening, the supplemental opening into the first void space; a first fitting attached to said housing to which a first suction line that extends from a medical/surgical site can be attached, said first fitting opening into the first void space; a first backflow prevention valve is mounted to said housing to prevent backflow from said housing second void space, through the aperture in the interior wall of said housing and into the first void space of said housing; and a cap that is removably attached to said housing so as to seat over the supplemental opening of said housing, said cap having an inner surface that is directed to said housing first void space; a porous screen that is removably attached to the inner surface of said cap and shaped to occupy said housing first void space so that, when said screen is attached to said cap and said cap is disposed over the supplemental opening of said housing, fluid that flows from the first fitting through the first void space of the housing into the
