Official abstract text for this publication.
A filter unit includes a body portion having a proximal end and a distal end. An engagement protrusion extends from the proximal end. The engagement protrusion includes a first portion that has a first radius of curvature and a second portion opposing the first portion that has a second radius of curvature that is larger than the first radius of curvature. A protruding retention surface is disposed on and extends radially outward from the body portion. The protruding retention surface is adapted to secure the filter unit in a filter head assembly.

The invention claimed is: 1. A unit for engagement with a water filter system comprising: an engagement protrusion extending from a proximal body portion, wherein the engagement protrusion is configured for selective rotational engagement in a complementary receiver in a filter head assembly, wherein the selective rotational engagement of the engagement protrusion with the complementary receiver places the filter head assembly in selective communication with an interior of the proximal body portion; at least one engagement surface traversing around at least part of the proximal body portion at an angle, the at least one engagement surface configured to cooperate with the complementary receiver in the filter head assembly to define the selective rotational engagement; and at least one seal member disposed on a sidewall of the engagement protrusion, wherein a cross section of the at least one seal member taken at an angle perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the engagement protrusion and through the sidewall at the at least one seal member includes only one axis of symmetry. 2. The unit of claim 1 , wherein the proximal body portion is configured to receive a water filter, and wherein the water filter includes a filtering media. 3. The unit of claim 2 , further comprising: an electronic device positioned on the proximal body portion configured to store usage information relating to the capacity and usage of the filtering media. 4. The unit of claim 1 , further comprising: a first engagement surface of the at least one engagement surface traversing at least part of the proximal body portion; a second engagement surface of the at least one engagement surface traversing at least part of the proximal body portion; and a laterally extending key member of the at least one engagement surface disposed on the proximal body portion between the first engagement surface and the second engagement surface, the laterally extending key member configured to reposition an interference member of the filter head assembly from an interference position, whereby the proximal body portion cannot be fully inserted into the filter head assembly, to a non-interference position, whereby the proximal body portion can be fully inserted into the filter head assembly. 5. The unit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one seal member includes first and second seal members disposed on an outer surface of the sidewall. 6. The unit of claim 5 , further comprising: a side aperture disposed on the engagement protrusion disposed between the first and second seal members; and an end aperture disposed on the engagement protrusion. 7. The unit of claim 1 , wherein the interior of the proximal body portion is configured to receive a water filter.
