The invention claimed is: 1. A cyclone assembly for a surface cleaning apparatus comprising: (a) a first cyclonic cleaning stage comprising at least one first stage inverted cyclone having a first stage cyclone chamber and a first stage cyclone axis of rotation; (b) a second cyclonic cleaning stage downstream from the first cyclonic cleaning stage and comprising a plurality of inverted second stage cyclones in parallel, each of the plurality of second stage cyclones has a second stage cyclone chamber, wherein the second cyclonic cleaning stage comprises a second stage dirt collection region and at least a portion of the second stage dirt collection region is positioned axially spaced from the first stage cyclone chamber along the first stage cyclone axis of rotation, and overlying the first stage cyclone chamber so as to be above the first stage cyclone chamber. 2. The cyclone assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least a portion of the second stage dirt collection region is positioned on an upper end of the first cyclonic cleaning stage. 3. The cyclone assembly of claim 1 wherein the second stage dirt collection region is external to the second stage cyclones. 4. The cyclone assembly of claim 3 wherein the second stage dirt collection region comprises a plurality of second stage dirt collection chambers. 5. The cyclone assembly of claim 1 wherein each second stage cyclone chamber has a second stage cyclone dirt outlet, each of which is provided in a sidewall of one of the second stage cyclones. 6. The cyclone assembly of claim 1 wherein the first cyclonic cleaning stage has a first stage dirt collection region that is external to the at least one first stage inverted cyclone and each first stage cyclone chamber has a first stage cyclone dirt outlet which is provided in a sidewall of the at least one first stage inverted cyclone. 7. The cyclone assembly of claim 1 further comprising an openable lid which closes an upper end of the second stage cyclones and the second stage dirt collection region wherein when the openable lid is in an open position, the upper end of the second stage cyclones and the second stage dirt collection region is opened. 8. The cyclone assembly of claim 1 wherein the first cyclonic cleaning stage has a first stage dirt collection region that is external to the at least one first stage inverted cyclone and the first and second cyclonic cleaning stages comprise a cyclone bin assembly having an upper end comprising the second stage dirt collection region and the upper end is moveably to an open position in which the at least one first stage inverted cyclone and the first stage dirt collection region are open. 9. The cyclone assembly of claim 8 wherein when the upper end is in the open position the second stage dirt collection region is closed. 10. The cyclone assembly of claim 8 wherein when the upper end is in the open position the second stage cyclones are also opened. 11. The cyclone assembly of claim 9 further comprising an openable lid which closes an upper end of the second stage dirt collection region wherein when the openable lid is in an open position, the upper end of the second stage dirt collection region is opened and the openable lid is openable when the upper end is in the open position. 12. The cyclone assembly of claim 8 wherein when the upper end comprises an upper openable lid which closes an upper end of the second stage dirt collection region and a lower wall, the lower wall comprises an upper end wall of the at least one first stage inverted cyclone.
