Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus, and an associated method, for directing communications of a communication session to a selected communication device, or devices, of a group of commonly-registered devices. A device-direction policy is created and stored at a network entity. The policy identifies preferred devices to which communications of a communication session are to be provided. A SIP Invite, or other communication-session initiation message, is provided to the network entity. The network entity detects the message, accesses the policy, and forwards on the message in accordance with the policy.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A device for transferring a media type in an ongoing multimedia communication session between a first device and a second device, the ongoing multimedia communication session corresponding to a current SIP dialog, the device being associated with the second device and comprising a hardware processor in communication with a memory with instructions stored in the memory and executed by the hardware processor to: send, from the second device, a SIP REFER request message separate from the current SIP dialog to a network apparatus for redirecting at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session having more than one media type to a third device, the SIP REFER request message including a Target-Dialog header field that identifies the current SIP dialog, the SIP REFER request message further including a Refer-To header field, the Refer-To header field including a uniform resource indicator (URI), the URI comprising the third device's address and a header parameter, the header parameter being a hname “body” parameter, the header parameter including session description protocol (SDP), the SDP including a first portion, the first portion of the SDP comprising the at least one media type to be included in a message body of a SIP INVITE to the third device, the SDP further including a second portion, the second portion of the SDP comprising another media type to be included in a message body of a SIP Re-INVITE to the second device, the SDP including an identification of the at least one media type to be transferred, and the media types of the ongoing multimedia communication session are then split such that the second device and the third device are each in a media session with the first device, with the second device and the third device each having at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session with the first device; and receive, at the second device, the SIP Re-INVITE, the message body of the SIP Re-INVITE including the second portion of the SDP. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the URI contains one of a GRUU, a telephone number, a SIP URI, or a SIPS URI. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one media type identified for transferring to the third device comprises at least one of an audio media type, a video media type, a text media type and a data media type. 4. A method for transferring a media type in an ongoing multimedia communication session between a first device and a second device, the ongoing multimedia communication session corresponding to a current SIP dialog, the method comprising: sending, from the second device, a SIP REFER request message separate from the current SIP dialog to a network apparatus for redirecting at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session having more than one media type to a third device, the SIP REFER request message including a Target-Dialog header field that identifies the current SIP dialog, the SIP REFER request message further including a Refer-To header field, the Refer-To header field including a uniform resource indicator (URI), the URI comprising the third device's address and a header parameter, the header parameter being a hname “body” parameter, the header parameter including session description protocol (SDP), the SDP including a first portion, the first portion of the SDP comprising the at least one media type to be included in a message body of a SIP INVITE to the third device, the SDP further including a second portion, the second portion of the SDP comprising another media type to be included in a message body of a SIP Re-INVITE to the second device, the SDP including an identification of the at least one media type to be transferred, and the media types of the ongoing multimedia communication session are then split such that the second device and the third device are each in a media session with the first device, with the second device and the third device each having at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session with the first device; and receiving, at the second device, the SIP Re-INVITE, the message body of the SIP Re-INVITE including the second portion of the SDP. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the URI contains a GRUU, a telephone number, a SIP URI, or a SIPS URI. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the at least one media type identified for transferring to the third device comprises at least one of an audio media type, a video media type, a text media type and a data media type. 7. A network apparatus for transferring a media type in an ongoing multimedia communication session between a first device and a second device, the ongoing multimedia communication session corresponding to a current SIP dialog, the network apparatus comprising a hardware processor in communication with a memory with instructions stored in the memory and executed by the hardware processor to: receive, from the second device, a SIP REFER request message separate from the current SIP dialog for redirecting at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session having more than one media type to a third device, the SIP REFER request message including a Target-Dialog header field that identifies the current SIP dialog, the SIP REFER request message further including a Refer-To header field, the Refer-To header field including a uniform resource indicator (URI), the URI comprising the third device's address and a header parameter, the header parameter being a hname “body” parameter, the header parameter including session description protocol (SDP), the SDP including a first portion, the first portion of the SDP comprising the at least one media type to be included in a message body of a SIP INVITE to the third device, the SDP further including a second portion, the second portion of the SDP comprising another media type to be included in a message body of a SIP Re-INVITE to the second device, the SDP including an identification of the at least one media type to be transferred; send the SIP INVITE to the third device for effectuating a media session between the first device and the third device, whereby the media types of the ongoing multimedia communication session are then split such that the second device and the third device are each in a media session with the first device, with the second device and the third device each having at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session with the first device; and transmit, to the second device, the SIP Re-INVITE, the message body of the SIP Re-INVITE including the second portion of the SDP. 8. A method operating at a network apparatus for transferring a media type in an ongoing multimedia communication session between a first device and a second device, the ongoing multimedia communication session corresponding to a current SIP dialog, the method comprising: receiving, from the second device, a SIP REFER request message separate from the current SIP dialog for redirecting at least one media type of the ongoing multimedia communication session having more than one media type to a third device, the SIP REFER request message including a Target-Dialog header field that identifies the current SIP dialog, the SIP REFER request message further including a Refer-To header field, the Refer-To header field including a uniform resource indicator (URI), the URI comprising the third device's address and a header parameter, the header parameter being a hname “body” parameter, the header parameter including session description protocol (SDP), the SDP including a first portion, the first portion of the SDP comprising the at least one media type to be included in a message body of a SIP INVITE to the third device, the SDP further including a second portio
