A seal includes a housing having a back plate and a front plate. A supporting bristle layer is disposed adjacent to the back plate, and bristles in the supporting bristle layer have a first diameter. A sealing bristle layer is disposed adjacent to the supporting bristle layer, and bristles in the sealing bristle layer have a second diameter. A shielding/protecting bristle layer is disposed adjacent to the sealing bristle layer, and bristles in the shielding/protecting bristle layer have a third diameter. The second diameter is smaller than both the first diameter and the third diameter.

The invention claimed is: 1. A seal comprising: a housing having a back plate and a front plate; a supporting bristle layer disposed adjacent to the back plate, bristles in the supporting bristle layer having a first diameter; a sealing bristle layer disposed adjacent to the supporting bristle layer, bristles in the sealing bristle layer having a second diameter; a shielding bristle layer disposed adjacent to the sealing bristle layer, bristles in the shielding bristle layer having a third diameter; and wherein, the second diameter is smaller than both the first diameter and the third diameter. 2. The seal according to claim 1 , wherein the first diameter is larger than the third diameter. 3. The seal according to claim 1 , wherein a bristle stiffness of the supporting bristle layer is greater than a bristle stiffness of the sealing bristle layer and a bristle stiffness of the shielding bristle layer. 4. The seal according to claim 3 , wherein the bristle stiffness of the shielding bristle layer is greater than the bristle stiffness of the sealing bristle layer. 5. The seal according to claim 1 , wherein a diameter of individual bristles in the supporting bristle layer is about 0.006 inches to about 0.010 inches, and a diameter of individual bristles in the sealing bristle layer is about 0.002 inches to about 0.006 inches, and a diameter of individual bristles in the shielding bristle layer is about 0.004 inches to about 0.008 inches. 6. The seal according to claim 1 , further comprising: a tapered surface located near one end of the supporting bristle layer; wherein the tapered surface reduces an impact of the supporting bristle layer on a rotating shaft. 7. The seal according to claim 6 , further comprising: the tapered surface located near one end and in at least a portion of the sealing bristle layer. 8. The seal according to claim 1 , wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the shielding bristle layer comprise at least one, or combinations of, metallic material and non-metallic material. 9. The brush seal according to claim 8 , wherein the metallic material comprises at least one or combinations of: copper, steel and metal alloys. 10. The seal according to claim 9 , wherein the metal alloys comprise one or combinations of: cobalt alloys and nickel alloys. 11. The seal according to claim 8 , wherein the non-metallic material comprises: para-aramid synthetic fibers, carbon fibers or combinations thereof. 12. The seal according to claim 1 , wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the shielding bristle layer are mounted to the housing using at least one of, an epoxy material or a weld. 13. The seal according to claim 1 , wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the shielding bristle layer are mounted to the housing with an annular wire and a clamp, wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the shielding bristle layer pass over the annular wire and are retained by the clamp. 14. A seal comprising: a housing having a back plate and a front plate; a supporting bristle layer disposed adjacent to and in front of the back plate, bristles in the supporting bristle layer having a first stiffness; a sealing bristle layer disposed adjacent to and in front of the supporting bristle layer, bristles in the sealing bristle layer having a second stiffness, the supporting bristle layer supporting the sealing bristle layer; a protecting bristle layer disposed adjacent to and in front of the sealing bristle layer, bristles in the protecting bristle layer having a third stiffness, the protecting bristle layer protecting the sealing bristle layer; and wherein, the second stiffness is less than both the first stiffness and the third stiffness, and the sealing bristle layer is sandwiched between the supporting bristle layer and the protecting bristle layer. 15. The seal according to claim 14 , wherein the first stiffness is greater than the third stiffness. 16. The seal according to claim 14 , further comprising: a tapered surface located near one end of the supporting bristle layer; wherein the tapered surface is configured to reduce an impact of the supporting bristle layer on a rotating shaft. 17. The seal according to claim 16 , further comprising: the tapered surface located near one end and in at least a portion of the sealing bristle layer. 18. The seal according to claim 14 , wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the protecting bristle layer comprise at least one of, a metallic material and a non-metallic material, the metallic material being a copper, steel or metal alloy, and the non-metallic material being a para-aramid synthetic fiber, carbon fiber or combinations thereof. 19. The seal according to claim 18 , wherein the metal alloys comprise one or combinations of: cobalt alloys and nickel alloys. 20. The seal according to claim 14 , wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the protecting bristle layer are mounted to the brush housing using at least one of: an epoxy material; a weld; and an annular wire and a clamp, wherein the supporting bristle layer, the sealing bristle layer and the protecting bristle layer pass over the annular wire and are retained by the clamp.
