A method for marking a petroleum hydrocarbon or a liquid biologically derived fuel by adding to the petroleum hydrocarbon or liquid biologically derived fuel a compound having formula C{Ph(R 1 ) i (OR 2 ) j } 2 {Ph(R 3 ) m (OR 4 ) n }{Ph(R 5 ) o (OR 6 ) p }, wherein Ph represents a benzene ring, R 1 , R 3 and R 5 independently are C 1 -C 18 alkyl or C 4 -C 18 heteroalkyl; R 2 , R 4 and R 6 independently are C 1 -C 18 alkyl or C 4 -C 18 heteroalkyl, i, j, m, n, o and p independently are zero, one or two. Each compound having formula C{Ph(R 1 ) i (OR 2 ) j } 2 {Ph(R 3 ) m (OR 4 ) n }{Ph(R 5 ) o (OR 6 ) p } is present at a level from 0.01 ppm to 20 ppm.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for marking a petroleum hydrocarbon or a liquid biologically derived fuel; said method comprising adding to said petroleum hydrocarbon or liquid biologically derived fuel at least one compound having formula C{Ph(R 1 ) i (OR 2 ) j } 2 {Ph(R 3 ) m (OR 4 ) n }{Ph(R 5 ) o (OR 6 ) p }, wherein Ph represents a benzene ring, R 1 , R 3 and R 5 independently are C 1 -C 8 alkyl or C 4 -C 18 heteroalkyl; R 2 , R 4 and R 6 independently are C 1 -C 8 alkyl or C 4 -C 18 heteroalkyl, i, j, m, n, o and p independently are zero, one or two; provided that (a) at least one of i and j is not zero, or (b) at least one of m and n and at least one of o and p are not zero; wherein each compound having formula C{Ph(R 1 ) i (OR 2 ) j } 2 {Ph(R 3 ) m (OR 4 ) n }{Ph(R 5 ) o (OR 6 ) p } is present at a level from 0.01 ppm to 20 ppm and wherein all R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 substituents collectively have a total of eight to thirty-five carbon atoms. 2. The method of claim 1 in which at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 has at least three carbon atoms. 3. The method of claim/in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are independently are C 1 -C 16 alkyl. 4. The method of claim 3 in which each compound having formula C{Ph(R 1 ) i (OR 2 ) j } 2 {Ph(R 3 ) m (OR 4 ) n }{Ph(R 5 ) o (OR 6 ) p } is present at a level from 0.01 ppm to 10 ppm. 5. The method of claim 4 in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are saturated and acyclic. 6. The method of claim 5 in which j is one or two. 7. The method of claim 1 in which at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 has at least three carbon atoms. 8. The method of claim/in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are independently are C 1 -C 16 alkyl. 9. The method of claim 8 in which each compound having formula C{Ph(R 1 ) i (OR 2 ) j } 2 {Ph(R 3 ) m (OR 4 ) n }{Ph(R 5 ) o (OR 6 ) p } is present at a level from 0.01 ppm to 10 ppm.
