The invention relates to N-(1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)arylcarboxamides of formula I and their use as herbicides. In said formula I, X represents N or CR 2 , whereas R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 and R 7 represent groups such as hydrogen, halogen or organic groups such as alkyl or phenyl.

or R 2 and R 3 together form a saturated 5- or 6-membered ring, optionally containing an oxygen or a S(O) n heteroatom, the 5- or 6-membered ring being unsubstituted or substituted by 1, 2 or 3 groups, which are identical or different and selected from the group consisting of halogen, C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, C 1 -C 4 -haloalkyl and C 1 -C 4 -alkoxy;
