A self-sealing liquid bladder having a plurality of layers including a liquid impermeable material layer that is compatible with a liquid held in the bladder and at least one sealing layer that is conformally arranged to span a surface area of the liquid impermeable material layer and that is separated from a liquid held in the bladder by the liquid impermeable layer, the sealing layer including a sealing means that, in response to a penetration of both the liquid impermeable material layer and the sealing layer, substantially seals the penetration.

What is claimed is: 1. A self-sealing liquid bladder comprising a liquid bladder having a plurality of layers including a liquid impermeable material layer that is compatible with a liquid held in the bladder, and at least one sealing layer that is conformally arranged to span a surface area of the liquid impermeable material layer and that is separated from a liquid held in the bladder by the liquid impermeable layer wherein the sealing layer includes at least one compressed fiber material that is retained in the sealing layer in a compressed state until a hole is formed in the liquid bladder at which time the compressed fiber material adjacent to the hole expands to at least partially plug the hole wherein the compressed fiber material is retained in a compressed state by a bladder fluid reactive material that releases the compressed fiber material upon contact with the liquid in the bladder. 2. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the at least one compressed fiber material is selected from or more of fibers, fabrics, non-wovens, and felts. 3. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the bladder fluid reactive material that retains the compressed material in a compressed state participates in substantially sealing a bladder hole. 4. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the bladder fluid reactive material is a sheath that holds the compressed fiber material in a compressed state until liquid in the bladder contacts the compressed material. 5. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the bladder fluid reactive material impregnates the compressed fiber material and retains it in a compressed state. 6. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the compressed fiber material is selected from one or more of kinked fibers, coiled fibers, asymmetric expanding fibers, hollow fibers, non-uniform fibers, non-circular fibers, and discontinuous fibers. 7. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the compressed fiber material is one or more compressed fiber mats. 8. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the compressed fiber material includes a first bladder fluid absorbent material. 9. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the bladder includes an outer wall wherein the compressed fiber material sealing layer is positioned between the liquid impermeable material layer and the outer wall. 10. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 9 wherein a plurality of partition walls are positioned between the liquid impermeable material layer and the bladder outer wall to form a plurality of discrete cells each cell containing compressed fiber material. 11. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the sealing layer includes at least two separate layers of compressed fiber materials. 12. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 11 wherein the at least two separate layers of compressed fiber materials are separated by dividers. 13. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein two or more layers of compressed fiber materials are used and wherein the layers are separated by a divider. 14. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 13 wherein the divider is impermeable to liquid in the bladder. 15. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 13 wherein the divider is permeable to liquid in the bladder. 16. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 1 wherein the bladder fluid reactive material reacts with the fluid in the bladder or with a material present in the sealing layer to form a reaction product that operates in unison with the released compressible material to seal a bladder perforation. 17. A self-sealing liquid bladder comprising a liquid bladder having a plurality of layers including a liquid impermeable material layer that is compatible with a liquid held in the bladder, and at least one sealing layer that is conformally arranged to span a surface area of the liquid impermeable material layer and that is separated from a liquid held in the bladder by the liquid impermeable layer wherein the sealing layer includes at least one compressed material that is retained in the sealing layer in a compressed state until a hole is formed in the liquid bladder at which time the compressed material adjacent to the hole expands to at least partially plug the hole wherein the at least one compressed material are more than one individually compressed spring structures. 18. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 17 wherein the individually compressed spring structures are oriented in the sealing layer to expand in two dimensions upon being released. 19. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 17 wherein the individually compressed spring structures are arranged to expand in three dimensions upon being released. 20. The self-sealing liquid bladder of claim 17 wherein the individually compressed spring structures are arranged to expand in random directions upon being released.
